Enrico Peele Named SIAC Starting Pitcher Of The Year

ATLANTA, Ga.– Savannah State right-handed ace Enrico Peele was named the 2023 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Starting Pitcher of the Year, according to a press release from the conference office Thursday morning.
 
Peele, an All-SIAC Preseason First Teamer, emerged as one of the best right-handers on a staff of aces in his senior season. Peele finished the regular season 11-1 overall after 12 appearances and 12 starts.
 
He is ranked No. 1 in the conference and No. 2 in NCAA Division II in victories. Peele has a conference-best 2.23 ERA this season with a 1.19 WHIP. In 64.2 innings of work, he's recorded 59 strikeouts and 20 walks as batters have hit only .234 against him.
 
Joe Smith was named to the All-SIAC First Team along with Peele. Last year's SIAC Player of the Year topped all the stats again in his final collegiate season.
 
Smith leads the Tigers and the SIAC with a .442 batting average—No. 10 in NCAA Division II. He has 51 runs, 61 hits, 11 doubles, six triples, six home runs and 47 RBI on the season. In the outfield, Smith's fielding has been perfect, with 67 catches, 65 putouts, two assists and no errors on the year.
 
Making the All-SIAC Second Team for Savannah State was pitcher's Jose Santiago and Jared Showalter. The two right-handers have been titans for Savannah State this season.
 
In his second year at Savannah State, Santiago, an All-SIAC Preseason First Teamer, appeared in 13 games, starting nine. He is currently 6-2 with a 2.89 ERA, and a 1.21 WHIP. The junior has 51 strikeouts, 15 walks, and one shutout in 59.1 innings pitched this season.
 
Showalter, an All-SIAC Preseason First Teamer, has 12 appearances and 12 starts this season with a 3.32 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. Showalter is 9-2 on the season after 62.1 innings pitched and leads the team in strikeouts with 66. He's walked 25 and batters are hitting .227 against him this year.
 
Savannah State earned the No. 2 seed ahead of the 2023 Cricket SIAC Baseball Championship after finishing the regular season with a 25-7 conference record and a 29-10 overall record.
 
The Tigers open the tournament on May 4 at 12 p.m. against the No. 7 seed, Lane College. The double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday, May 7 on Albany State's campus and the Sherwood Christian Academy campus in Albany, Georgia.
