ATLANTA, Ga.– The Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams earned 15 medals and sent 10 student-athletes to the podium at the 2023 Cricket Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship this weekend.

The Lady Tigers finished third overall in the team standings with 102 points while the Tigers finished fourth overall with 65 points. This year's conference championship was hosted by Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia April 27-April 29.

"I think the team did a great job," Head Track and Field Coach Ted Whitaker said. "We lost a lot of kids during the year for a lot of reasons. If we had kept the kids, we would have finished higher. Our kids performed extremely well though. I was very pleased with how they did."

Leading Savannah State on the track was long-distance star Kayla Chance who nabbed four gold medals, decimating conference foes in the long-distance events.

Chance won the 800m run with a time of 2:20.75 and placed first in the preliminaries with a time of 2:24.01. She won the 1500m with a 4:57.18 and won the preliminaries with a 5:09.71.

Chance won the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 12:10.67 and the 5000m with a time of 19:20.07 for her fourth gold medal. Chance, a two-time SIAC Cross Country Champion, holds five school records in long-distance events.

Ravyn Cystrunk made two trips to the podium. Cystrunk finished second in the 200m final, earning silver with a time of 24.98. She finished third in the prelims, running a 25.51. She earned bronze in the 400m finals with a time of 55.82. She finished first in the prelims of the event with a 56.43.

Sadrea Mabry earned two gold medals in the field events. Mabry won the long jump with a 5.56m effort. She won the triple jump with a 12.12m effort.

Teammate Da'Alilyah Johnson earned silver in the triple jump, recording an 11.10m jump. Kennedy Spears earned silver in the high jump with a 1.65m effort.

For the men, Winfred Porter won bronze in the 100m run, finishing with a 10.77. He finished second in the prelims with a 10.61. He missed the podium by two tenths of a second in the 200m, running a 21.65 for a fourth place finish—bested by a 21.63 finish from Tuskegee's Dennis Bailey.

The relay team of Dominique Bailey, Yastremski Johnson, Solomon Mitchell and Porter earned bronze in the 4x100m relay race finishing with a 41.53.

Bailey earned a silver medal in the decathlon, earning a total of 5154 points. Mitchell earned bronze in the same event with 4923 points.

In the field, Dwayne Chenault earned bronze in the triple jump, recording a 13.83m effort. Aidan Holliman finished just behind him with a 12.56. Holliman finished fourth in the high jump with a 2.00m effort.

Benedict won both the men's and women's SIAC Championships. The women won with 190 total points while the Benedict men won with 215.5 points.

Clark Atlanta finished second on the women's side. Albany State finished fourth followed by Fort Valley State. Morehouse finished second on the men's side followed by Albany State. Spring Hill finished fifth on the men's side.

The Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams conclude a very successful season that saw a number of new school records, gold medals, and tons of personal best records.

Currently, Porter has earned a chance at participating in the NCAA Division II Championships in two events later in May. He is nationally ranked No. 18 in the 100m and No. 27 in the 200m, receiving NCAA provisional marks for both.
