Porter, Johnson Lead Track Tigers With New Personal Bests At USC Open

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Two Savannah State men's track & field runners outperformed their past selves this weekend at the University of South Carolina Open.
 
Winfred Porter ran a 10.34 in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 12th place, and setting a new personal best time in the event. The 10.34 time moved Porter into 15th place in the NCAA Division II standings as well, qualifying him for the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
 
In the same event, Yastremski Johnson ran a 10.67, setting a new personal best time as well. Johnson also set a new personal best in the 200m, running a  22.16.
 
Porter ran another top performance in the 200m dash, finishing 14th with a time of 21.22, another new personal best. The time also qualified Porter for the 200m event at the NCAA Championships. He is ranked No. 42 nationally in the event.
 
The 4x100 relay team of Dominique Bailey, Johnson, Solomon Mitchell, and Porter finished 10th with a time of 41.33, topping several NCAA Division I teams.
 
In field events, Bailey snagged a 12th place finish in the long jump with a 6.49m effort. Mitchell finished behind him with a 6.25m jump. Mitchell finished 15th in the triple jump with a 13.09m effort.
 
Savannah State men's and women's track and field teams next head to the 2023 Cricket SIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Atlanta, Georgia, set for April 27-April 29.
