Tigers Take Two From Clark Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga.– Down the final stretch of the regular season, Savannah State baseball won two out of a three in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series this weekend against Clark Atlanta.

The Tigers closed the series with a 26-10 overall record and a 22-7 SIAC record ahead of the final three games of the regular season. Savannah State sits in third place in the SIAC standings, trailing reigning champions Spring Hill (27-18, 25-4) and Albany State (30-8, 27-2).

Savannah State closes out the regular season this Thursday and Friday on their home diamond. They face Morehouse College in a three-game series ahead of the 2023 Cricket SIAC Baseball Championship, set for May 4-May 7 in Albany, Georgia.

In game one of the series against Clark Atlanta, Jose Santiago pitched the Tigers to a huge 11-1 rout. The junior right-hander went 7.0 innings on the mound, allowing only one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts.

Savannah State found room to work at the plate early on. In the top of the first inning, lead-off man Joe Smith blasted to a double to spark a seven-run inning for the Tigers. SSU put up four more hits as they batted around the order. Smith tacked on another single in his second at-bat to open the game.

Clark managed a run in the bottom of the second, but SSU put two more up in the fifth behind a costly error and two more in the eighth off walks and wild pitches from Clark Atlanta.

Joe Smith led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Jaden Oden, Cooper LeTellier, Desmore Joseph and Gabriel Patxot each had hits in the win.

The script was a flipped in game two of the series, and the first of a doubleheader on Saturday. Savannah State again started out strong, taking a 4-0 lead into the third inning. Clark fired back with two runs in the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Joseph blasted a two-run homer scoring Andrai Wright who walked for two more SSU runs. The Tigers tacked another run off an error. Later in the inning, Joe Smith singled to score Jake Grubesic and Savannah State pushed out to an 8-2 lead.

Savannah State starter Jared Showalter pitched 5.1 innings for the Tigers. He was pulled in the sixth when he got into some trouble. Clark opened the sixth inning with four singles and a run ending Showalter's day.

Clark put up four runs on five hits in the sixth to cut SSU's lead to 8-6 into the seventh. They got closer in the bottom of the seventh with another run to get within one of the Tigers' lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Savannah State committed two costly errors that put runners on. Andrew Garner blasted a grand slam, clearing the basses and lifting the home team to a 12-8 lead—which would be the final score.

Joe Smith again led the Tigers, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Joseph was also 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Showalter finished 5.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Clayton Brody was tagged with the pitching loss after 0.2 innings of work.

Savannah State returned to form in the final game of the series, and the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. They got some help from right-handed ace Enrico Peele.

Peele pitched 6.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks, picking up his 10th win of the season. Peele leads the SIAC and is second in NCAA Division II in victories this season.

But it was the Savannah State bats that saved the Tigers in the final game of the series. Heading into to the seventh inning, the game was knotted up at 4-all.

Omar Almodovar was walked and Patxot was hit with a pitch to reach, putting the go-ahead run into scoring position to kick-off the seventh. Joe Smith singled to load the basses.

Then Tyler Green earned his first of two saves for the Tigers. Green hit a single to right, scoring Almodovar and Patxot, and lifting SSU into the lead.

Savannah State put up two more runs a behind two more hits for an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the frame.

On the mound, in relief, Green earned his second save of the day. With one runner on, Green opened with a strikeout against his first batter. Later, Clark scored a run on a fielder's choice. The game was saved on a third-out flyout after the go-ahead run was put on by Clark.

Green pitched 1.0 innings allowing no earned runs on no hits with one walk and one strikeout to pick up his first save of the year in the 8-5 win for Savannah State. Green was also 3-for-5 at the plate on the day with three RBI to lead the team.
