Baseball Closes Regular Season With Sweep of Morehouse

Tigers Unofficially No. 2 Seed Ahead Of SIAC Championship

SAVANNAH, Ga.– The predicted rain held off on Friday, opening the door for Savannah State baseball to close out its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Morehouse.

The Tigers finish the 2023 regular season campaign 29-10 overall and 25-7 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule. Unofficially, SSU has nabbed the No. 2 seed ahead of the 2023 Cricket SIAC Baseball Championship.

They trail Albany State (30-2 SIAC) and tied conference records with Spring Hill.  Savannah State beat Spring Hill, the reigning SIAC champions, two out of three games during the regular season and should get the tie-breaker to earn the No. 2 seed.

The SIAC will release official standings and conference tournament seeding's this coming week, before this year's battle for the title kicks-off on May 4 in Albany, Georgia.

Savannah State baseball also celebrated Senior Day on Friday, honoring 11 student-athletes before the game.

This year's senior class includes some of the team's top players. Joe Smith, Enrico Peele, Jared Showalter, Andrai Wright, Omar Almodovar, Champion Robbins, Gabriel Patxot, Andrew Mann, Clayton Brody, Jake Grubesic, and Jojuan Wimbley were honored in pregame ceremonies.

The Tigers opened the three game SIAC series with Morehouse on Thursday with a 12-8 win and closed out the series sweep winning game one of a doubleheader on Friday, 2-0, and game two 16-5.

In the opening game of the series, Savannah State used a late spark to rally for the win after getting down early. Morehouse opened the game with a huge first inning, plating five runs on six hits and taking advantage of a costly SSU error for a big lead early on.

Trailing 5-6, Savannah State knotted it up in the bottom of the fifth. Mason McLeod singled to right field, scoring Jaden Oden who singled to reach, tying the game up at six all.

Morehouse regained the lead in the top of the sixth behind two hits and a single run. But SSU responded with a big inning in the bottom of the frame.

Robbins singled to right scoring Wright, who reached on a single, to tie the game up at seven all. Oden broke the stalemate and gave the Tigers their first lead of the day with a big single to right that scored Robbins. Later, Joseph Desmore scored on a wild pitch to give SSU a 9-7 lead.

Morehouse tacked on one more run in the eighth but SSU responded in the bottom of the frame with three more off three hits and two Maroon Tiger errors, setting the final score, 12-8.

Both teams combined for a total of 30 hits. SSU put up 17 in the win while Morehouse had 13. Oden was 3-for-5 on the day to lead SSU at the plate. Green was 3-for-6, Smith was 2-for-3 with a double, and Patxot went 2-for-4.

Jose Santiago earned his sixth pitching win of the season after 6.0 innings on the mound. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Mann was excellent in relief, going 3.0 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.

Game one of Friday's doubleheader was an all-out pitching duel between Morehouse's Jaiden Proper and Peele.

Proper pitched a solid game against SSU, allowing only two earned runs off two hits in 6.0 innings on the mound with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Peele earned his 11th pitching win after a full 7.0 innings of work. He allowed no earned runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Peele leads the SIAC and is ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II in pitching victories this season.

But it was the Savannah State's seniors who propelled the Tigers to victory at the plate.

The only two runs of the game came in the fourth inning.  Smith led-off for the Tigers and hit his sixth home run of the season—he leads the SIAC in home runs this year. Oden followed that with a triple to right. Wright brought him home on a sacrifice fly for the final 2-0 score of the game.

In game two on Friday, the final of the series, Savannah State opened the scoring early and kept it going. They platted five runs in the first inning off three hits and then tacked on seven more runs in the third inning off three hits and an error, as the rout took shape.

Morehouse attempted a late rally in the sixth, platting three runs, but SSU responded in the bottom of the frame with four more for the final 16-5 score.

Showalter picked up his ninth pitching win of the season after 4.0 innings of work. He allowed one earned run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
