Tigers Escape Sweep With Big Win Against Miles

FAIRFIELD, Ala. – Savannah State hit the road this weekend, facing Miles College in a three-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series in Alabama.

After losing the first two games of the series, the Tigers pulled out a huge win in the final game to avoid being swept by Miles. The Tigers ended the weekend 18-8 overall and 14-6 in SIAC action.

The two losses shifted them into third place in the SIAC standings. Albany State leads the conference at 21-5 overall and 19-1 in conference followed by Spring Hill (18-14, 16-4).

In game one of the series against Miles, Jose Santiago and Kaleb Hellard went head-to-head in a pitching duel that held the game scoreless through four innings.

Miles broke the scoring stalemate in the bottom of the fifth, platting a single run on two hits. They tacked two more on in the sixth. Santiago was replaced ahead of the seventh by Andrew Mann. Santiago went 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in a strong outing for the junior.

Against Mann, Miles found some room to work, putting up seven more runs on six hits, ending the game with a grand slam from Trey Rutledge and then a triple from John Riley. Riley scored on a throwing error for the final 10-0 win for Miles.

Hellard pitched a gem for the home team, going 7.0 innings, allowing only two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Savannah State ace Jared Showalter pitched a strong 6.0 innings, recording a season-high 10 strikeouts—he leads the SIAC in strikeouts this season with 40. Showalter allowed six earned runs on 10 hits as well, as Miles again routed SSU 11-1, putting up five of those runs in the seventh inning.

The Miles pitching staff held SSU to only four hits in the loss—an usually low number for a team that was batting over .400 before the series and are ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division II and No. 2 in the SIAC in batting average.

Savannah State flipped the script in game two on Saturday.

In the first at-bat of the game, SSU lead-off man Joe Smith doubled down the left-field line. He later was scored on a sacrifice fly from Andrai Wright. Miles answered the run in the bottom of the first inning. But, Joe Smith was just getting started.

Wright reached base on a walk in the top of the third, in a tie game. Cooper LeTellier blasted his third home run of the season to plate Wright and break the stalemate. Later in the inning, Joe Smith hit a three-run homerun over the left field wall, bringing Mason McLeod and Hunter Bradashaw in to notch a 7-1 lead for SSU.

Miles dug deep into their bullpen in the game, but Savannah State seemed to have answers for everything thrown at them. The Tigers all but sealed up the rout in the fourth inning. Joe Smith opened the scoring with a single that platted Jacob Rushin, who walked, and SSU was off to the races.

Five hits later, after batting around, SSU had 10 more runs for a 17-1 lead into the bottom of the frame. The Tigers would add three more runs in the sixth off five hits for a massive 20-4 lead.

But Miles wasn't done, heading into the seventh inning down by 16 runs. Facing three relievers from the SSU bullpen in the final inning, the Golden Bears attempted a solid rally putting up nine runs on four hits to cut the Tigers' lead to only seven runs.

With no outs on the board, leading 20-13, Savannah State looked to be in trouble. Mann, pitching in relief, held the home team at bay with two key strikeouts and a forced foul out to end the game.

Joe Smith finished with one of his best days on the diamond, going 4-for-6 with two runs and six RBI. He hit for the cycle, putting up a single, double, triple, and home run. Wright and Bradshaw had strong outings as well at the plate, each going 4-for-4, as the Tigers put up a season-high 20 hits on the board.

Enrico Peele earned his seventh pitching win of the season. He went 5.0 innings, allowing no earned runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Savannah State will skip a mid-week game and return to action this Friday, April 7, on their home diamond. They face Tuskegee in a key three-game, SIAC series over the weekend. First pitch in Friday's single game is set for 4 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 12 p.m.
