Baseball Tigers Sweep SIAC Series With Tuskegee

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State baseball swept a three-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series with Tuskegee this past weekend.
 
The Tigers improved to 21-8 overall and 17-6 in conference action. They are in second place in the SIAC standings, trailing Albany State, into the final stretch of the regular season.
 
Savannah State will play three more SIAC series' to close out April and the 2023 campaign, prior to the 2023 Cricket SIAC Baseball Championship, May 4-May 7. The Tigers travel to LeMoyne-Owen this coming weekend, then Atlanta to face Clark Atlanta next weekend before hosting Morehouse in the season finale, April 27-28.
 
In game one against Tuskegee on Friday, the Tigers got some stellar effort from starting pitcher Jose Santiago. Santiago pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts, holding Tuskegee to a single run.
 
At the plate, the Tigers spread out three runs over the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Jaden Oden blasted a single to right field, scoring Joe Smith and Luka Torralva. On the next at-bat, Andrai Wright homered to left, scoring Oden and giving the Tigers an 8-1 lead.
 
Savannah State tacked on another run in the sixth and two more in the seventh for an 11-1 win. Oden was 2-for-2 at the plate, while Desmore Joseph went 2-for-3 for the Tigers.
 
The Tigers again saw fantastic work from their starting pitcher in game two on Friday. Enrico Peele picked up his eighth win of the season with a strong 7.0 innings of work. Peele pitched a shutout with five hits, no walks and four strikeouts.
 
In the third, with no score on the board, Gabriel Patxot reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then was scored on a single from Joe Smith. Smith was later platted on a sacrifice fly from Champion Robbins. Wright singled up the middle, scoring Oden, who reached on a single, as Savannah State took a 3-0 lead.
 
SSU would tack on one more run in the fourth and one in the sixth for the final 5-0 win in game two. Oden again led the Tigers, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Patxot had a good day too, going 2-for-2.
 
Saturday, the Tigers closed out the series with a 14-4 rout of Tuskegee.  Savannah State put up 10 hits in the win, with Joe Smith, Jaden Oden and Robbins leading the charge with two apiece. Jared Showalter picked up his seventh pitching win after 3.0 innings of work. He allowed four earned runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.
 
Savannah State returns to action this Saturday in Memphis, Tennessee against LeMoyne-Owen College. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CST start.
