Baseball Breezes Past Claflin

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State rolled past Claflin University in a mid-week, non-conference bout on Tiger Baseball Field.

The Tigers threw almost the entire bullpen at Claflin over nine innings, putting 11 pitchers on the mound. Relief pitcher Rahmir Vaughn picked up the win after 1.0 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs on two hits with one walk.

Starting pitcher Merritt Evans recorded a no decision after 1.0 innings on the mound. He allowed no earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

Following a scoreless first inning, Clafflin took an early lead, platting two runs in the top of the second off a ground-out from Jajuan Curry and a single from Rufus Hurdle.

But SSU responded in kind in the bottom of the frame. Zion Roland led-off for the Tigers with a double down the left-field line. Gabriel Patxot reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error that allowed Roland to score.

Jacob Rushin blasted a single through the left side to score Patxot. Mason McLeod then platted Rushin with a single of his own. Later, Joe Smith scored McLeod on a sac fly to center to push SSU out to a 4-2 lead.

Both teams went scoreless through the middle innings. In the bottom of the fifth,  Savannah State scored five runs without getting a single hit thanks to several walks, balks, and wild pitches.

The Tigers put up another run in the seventh and tacked on two more in the eighth for good measure for the 12-6 win.

Savannah State recorded nine hits in the game, one each from Joe Smith, Champion Robbins, Andrai Wright, Cooper LeTellier, Roland, Patxot, Rushin, Desmore Joseph, and McLeod.
