Tigers Pick Up One Win Against Top-Ranked Albany State

ALBANY, Ga.— In a three-game series with conference-leading Albany State, Savannah State picked up one big win handing the top-ranked team their first conference loss of the season.

Savannah State closed the series 10-5 overall and 7-4 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule. They sit in second place behind Albany State who is 11-1 in SIAC action and 13-4 overall.

Unlike other SIAC sports, baseball is not divided into East and West Divisions. Instead, each conference team simply vies for the best overall conference record to claim the regular season championship—which Savannah State won last year with a 28-2 record.

In game one of the series, Jose Santiago and Andrew Mann combined for some stellar pitching for Savannah State in a game lost in the final innings. Starting, Santiago pitched 5.1 innings, allowing only a single earned run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Mann closed it out with 2.2 innings, earning his second loss of the season. He allowed one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning, Champion Robbins scored Joe Smith on a double to center after the lead-off man reached on an error. Savannah State would tack on one more run in the fourth after both teams went scoreless through two innings.

Trailing into the fourth inning, Albany State took advantage of two costly SSU errors to plate three runs off one hit, taking a 3-2 lead. But SSU wasn't out of it. In the top of the fifth, Andrai Wright singled to center, scoring Jake Grubesic who reached on a fielder's choice. Gabriel Patxto scored Champion Robbins on a groundout, pushing the Tigers back into the lead, 4-3.

The battle continued into the sixth inning. Savannah State scored two more runs on two hits for a 6-3 lead. But Albany State responded in the bottom of the frame with a huge 5-run, 4-hit at-bat, to regain the lead, 8-6, into the seventh.

Down by two runs into the seventh, it was Albany State who made some tough errors to give SSU an advantage. Hakem Smith led off with a single and advance to second on an error.

Patxot pushed Smith into scoring position with a groundout. Smith scored on an error off a ball hit by Desmore Joseph. Omar Almadovar reached on an error and Joseph made it home on the same error to tie the game at 8-8.

Albany State's Jonathan Log opened the seventh inning with a big home run to give his team an 9-8 lead. An SSU error put another runner on, and a fly out from Austin Rober scored a second run to push the Golden Rams out to a 10-8 advantage.

The two-run lead for Albany State would stand as the final score after Savannah State stranded the tying run in the eighth.

Savannah State would find some relief after the frustrating end to a hard-fought opening game in game two of the series, and game one of a doubleheader, on Saturday.

Trailing 0-1 into the fourth inning, following a pitching duel between Jared Showalter and Brady Davis, SSU broke free. Wright walked and then stole second. Patxot walked to reach and Zion Roland reached on an error to load the basses.

Jacob Rushin blasted a single to center, scoring Wright. Then, Patxot scored on a wild pitch to lift SSU to a 2-1 lead. Almodovar cleared the remaining runners with a huge double to right. Later, Grubesic scored Almodovar with a groundout to give SSU a 5-1 lead.

Albany State scored one run in the fifth while SSU tacked on two more in the sixth for a 7-2 lead. Undeterred, Albany State looked to be rallying in the seventh against SSU relief pitcher Francisco Arraut, scoring three runs on three hits to cut the Tigers' lead to 7-5.

But Savannah State wasn't done. Grubesic was hit with a pitch and later scored on an error. Joe Smith also scored on that error after reaching on a fielder's choice. Later, Roland singled to center, scoring Jason Miller and Robbins. Patxot scored on error later too to notch the fifth run for SSU and a 12-5 lead.

The Tigers would score one more in the ninth for a 13-5 win. Showalter earned his fourth pitching win of the season after 6.0 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs with five walks and two strikeouts. Joe Smith again led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a homerun.

Showalter leads the SIAC in ERA this season and is ranked No. 30 in Division II. He's 4-1 overall with a 1.38 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.

In the final game of the series, Savannah State struggled at the plate as Landon Keife pitched a dime for Albany State. He went a full 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts leading his team to a 9-0 shutout win.

Enrico Peele was tagged with his first loss of the season, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
