Tigers Split High-Scoring DH With Kentucky State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRANKFORT, Ky.— Savannah State split a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader with Kentucky State over the weekend after weather shortened the three-game series.

In a high scoring doubleheader for both teams—who combined for 39 runs over two games—Savannah State was able to get some revenge in game two for a game one rout by Kentucky State.

In game one, the Thorobreds came out swinging in the second inning after SSU put up two runs in the opening inning. KSU blasted five hits, scoring five runs including a three-run homer to take a 6-2 lead into the middle innings.

By the seventh, KSU led 8-2 but SSU was still fighting. In the bottom of the eighth, KSU cleared the bases with a grand slam to notch four more runs for the home team, ending the game due to run rule with a 13-2 win.

Jared Showalter recorded his first pitching loss of the season after 3.0 innings of work. He allowed one earned run on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts against 21 batters. In relief, Andrew Mann pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Champion Robbins led the Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double. Gabriel Patxot had two hits in the loss.

The script flipped in game two on the day.

Savannah State came out swinging in the top of the first. Andrai Wright walked to load the basses for SSU after Jake Grubeisc was hit with a pitch and Robbins singled to reach. Grubeisc scored on a wild pitch and Zion Roland brought Robbins home.

Patxot blasted a double down the left-field line, scoring Wright and Hakem Smith who walked and SSU was off to the races. They put up six runs on five hits for the early momentum.

In the third, the Tigers tacked on three more runs on three hits for a 10-1 lead into the middle innings.

KSU fired back with four of their own in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to stop the Tigers who put up three more in the sixth and five in the seventh to end the game early due to run-rule. Savannah State won game two 19-5 racking up 17 hits in the game.

At the plate, lead-off man Joe Smith was 4-for-5 on the day. Robbins and Roland were each 3-for-5. Wright and Grubesic each tacked on two hits in the win.

Enrico Peel earned his fourth win of the season on the mound after 4.0 innings of work. He allowed one earned run on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
