Track Tigers Continue Spring Season At USC Weems Baskins Invite

COLUMBIA, S.C.– The Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed in the penultimate regular season meet this past weekend, recording several new personal bests.
 
The Tigers put their best foot forward at the University of South Carolina's Weems Baskins Invite on Friday and Saturday, competing against mostly NCAA Division I track stars.
 
Leading the men on the track was freshman Winfred Porter, who nabbed a top ten finish in the 100 meter dash. Porter finished seventh with a time of 10.70. He led SSU in the 200m as well, setting a new personal best with an 11th place finish and a college best 21.55.
 
Alex Loyd set a new personal best in the 800m dash as well, running a 2:06.89 to finish in the top 30.
 
In the field, freshman Aidan Holliman continued his incredible debut season with a 10th place finish in the high jump, recording a 1.93m effort.
 
Cameron Edwards set a new personal best in the triple jump, with a 14.18m effort finishing in ninth place. Evan Guyton recorded a 39.05 in the discuss finishing 20th.
 
For the Lady Tigers, senior Kayla Chance—five-time school record holder and two time Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Cross Country Champion— finished seventh in the 3000 steeplechase running a 13:07.84. She ran a 4:56.55 in the 1500m finishing 18th.
 
Ravyn Cystrunk led SSU in the 200m and 400m events. In the 200, she ran a 25.76 and in the 400m she recorded a 1:00.18. Delilyah Pelham ran a 12.94 in the 100m and a 26.56 in the 200m. In the field, Pelham finished in the top 30 of the long jump with a 4.59m effort.
 
Both Savannah State teams will close out the regular season at the 2023 Gamecock Invitational, hosted by the University of South Carolina on April 8, before they head to the 2023 Cricket SIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship set for April 27-April 29 at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
