Baseball Falls In Mid-Week Bout With Embry-Riddle

SAVANNAH, Ga.– Savannah State baseball dropped a non-conference, mid-week game to Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, falling 1-11 on Tiger Baseball Field.

The Tigers dropped to 14-6 on the season while the Eagles improved to 12-12 with the road win.

Andrew Mann opened the day on the mound for Savannah State and earned a strikeout in the first at-bat. But things quickly went down-hill from there. A walk and then a double from Embry Riddle setup a three-run inning for the visitors.

Savannah State stranded runners in the first and third innings, failing to answer the early lead. Embry Riddle tacked on three more runs in the fourth as the Tigers' pitching staff struggled to find the strike zone, walking in two runs and scoring one on a hit-by-pitch.

After a tough frame in the fourth, the Tigers tried to rally in the bottom of the inning. Champion Robbins singled to reach and made it to third on an error. Andrai Wright brought him home with a single to center.

Then Embry-Riddle turned a textbook double play off Hakem Smith to clear the bases. A fly-out from Desmore Joseph ended the hopeful rally attempt.

Batting against the bullpen in the fifth, Embry-Riddle tacked on three more runs behind two good hits for a 9-1 lead. They would add runs in the sixth and seventh for the final score. SSU stranded eight more runners through the final five innings.

The Tigers' best rally attempt came in the eighth. SSU switched up nearly the entire batting order with fresh players and the strategy seem to work. Jacob Rushin singled to reach after Jake Grubesic was hit to reach. Cooper LeTellier singled, loading the bags for the Tigers.

On a smart fielding play, Embry Riddle tagged Grubesic at home on a fielder's choice that put Hakem Smith on first. A strikeout would end the rally for SSU, leaving three runners on.

Embry Riddle's Gunnar Harrison picked up his third pitching win of the season, going 5.0 innings on the mound. He allowed no earned runs on five hits with one strikeout.

Mann pitched 3.1 innings for SSU and was tagged with his third loss of the season. He allowed three earned runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Robbins led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3. Joe Smith was 2-for-4 on the day.

Savannah State returns to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action this weekend with a three-game home series against Edward Waters University.

First pitch in the first game of the series is set for Friday at 2 p.m. The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
