Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Plain Leads Tigers Past Clark Atlanta On Senior Night

SAVANNAH, Ga.– Savannah State men's basketball escaped a defensive battle with Clark Atlanta on Saturday, celebrating Senior Day with their 15th win of the season with a 54-47 win.

The Tigers remained the No. 1 team in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division with an 11-5 conference record. They are 15-6 overall. In Tiger Arena this season, they are 11-0.

Prior to the game, Savannah State honored four seniors. The Bowles twins, Larson Ashford and Aly Keys were recognized for their massive contributions to the program.

But it was a sophomore who shined on Senior Night for Savannah State.

Clark opened Saturday's game with a 5-0 run. But SSU fired back quickly to tie it up. And then scoring all but dropped off for both teams. With 6:52 to play in the opening half, the Tigers led 10-9. In the remaining minutes, SSU pushed out to a 24-20 lead in the low-scoring defensive battle.

In the first half, both teams combined for a 28% clip from the floor, hitting 12-of-43 shots from the field. Ayjay Plain, however, was 4-for-7 from the floor and 8-for-9 at the charity strip, combing for 17 points at the midway mark.

Into the second half, Savannah State held their slim lead. Towards the end of the half, they pushed out to a 52-41 lead behind a 10-0 run, capped by two good free-throws from Plain at the 2:16 mark.

The late run was enough to shut down Clark Atlanta. Plain was sent to the line 14 times in the game. He made 12 of those shot and then hit 6-of-13 field goal attempts for a season high 25 points on the night, leading the entire field.

The Tigers have four remaining games in the regular season. Savannah State University will host the 2023 SIAC Basketball Tournament Championship presented by Cricket Feb. 25-March 4. Tickets are now on sale.
