Tigers Open Outdoor Season At SSU Eyeopoener

Holliman, Chance Set New School Records



SAVANNAH, Ga.– The Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened the 2023 outdoor season on Saturday with the annual Savannah State Eyeopener.
 
Savannah State hosted 12 teams in the annual event at Theodore A. Wright Stadium. Two of Savannah State's track stars set new school records and 23 new personal best records were set by both teams.
 
Freshman Aidan Holliman set a new school record in the men's outdoor high jump event. Holliman won the event with a 2.00m jump, eclipsing the previous record of 1.97m set by Andrew Stevenson at the Clemson Opener on Dec. 2, 2005 when SSU competed at the NCAA Division I level.
 
Perhaps one of the fastest runners the Savannah State women's track and field team has ever had set yet another new school record this weekend. Kayla Chance recorded her fifth school record with a 20:03.19 time in the 5000m event. Chance beat out Sadie Sellow's record of 20:32.01 set in 2009.
 
Chance now holds school records in the indoor 1 mile, indoor 3000 meter, outdoor 1500m, outdoor 5000m and outdoor distance medley.  
 
On Saturday, the Tigers won the men's side with a team score of 166. Followed by Morehouse, Albany State, Clayton State, Claflin, SCAD and Denmark Tech.
 
Out front on the track, Winfred Porter won the 100m final with a new personal best of 10.51. In the preliminaries of the event, Yestremeski Johnson set a new personal best of 10.99 while Solomon Mitchell did the same with a 10.99. Ti'an Rice also set a new personal best with an 11.94.
 
Porter also won the 200m final with a 21.68 followed by Mitchell who finished third with a new personal best 22.06. Alex Loyd ran a 23.45 and Rice ran a 24.97 in the same event, both were college best records for the two.
 
Dominique Bailey ran a personal best of 50.82 in the 400m final. Erik Roberts (4:25.86), Myles Corey (4:36.84) and Joseph Hale (5:04.50) all set personal bests in the 1500m run.
 
Roberts also led the Tigers in the 5000m with a third place finish, running an 18:33.73. Corey was just behind with a personal best time of 18:41.79.
 
Nyzaveon Thompson led SSU in the hurdles events. He finished first in the 400m with a time of 56.42 and second in the 110m hurdles with a 15.07.
 
The SSU relay team of Thompson, Johnson, Mitchell, and Porter won the 4x100m race with a time of 42.35.
 
On the women's side, Savannah State finished in second place with a team score of 148. Albany State won with a 162.5. Behind SSU, Clayton State, SCAD, Claflin, Wesleyan and Denmark Tech rounded out the field of seven.
 
Ravyn Cystrunk won the 200m dash with a personal best time of 25.02 and won the 400m dash with another personal best time of 57.89.
 
In addition to her new school record in the 5000m, Chance won the 1500m with a time of 4:58.98. Sky Buie-Cox set a new personal best in the 5000m with a time of 22:16.71.
 
Jeainna Bryant led SSU in the 100m hurdles with a second place finish and a college best time of 15:41. Ky'Leigha Robinson finished third with a time of 15.96. Bryant finished first in the preliminaries of the event with a 14.87.
 
The SSU relay team of Brant, Cystrunk, Sadrea Mabry and Delilyah Pelham won the 4x100 relay with a time of 47.94.
 
Kennedy Spears won the high jump event in women's field activities with a 1.57m effort. Ky'Leigha Robinson finished behind her with a college best jump of 1.42m.
 
Mabry won both the long jump and triple jump events. In the long jump she recorded a 5.10m effort and the in triple she posted a 12.02m jump.
 
Savannah State men's and women's track and field return to action in the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge on March 10.
