Chance Leads Track Tigers At USC Open With Fourth School Record

COLUMBIA, S.C.– Kayla Chance has become one of the fastest track stars Savannah State has ever had.
 
On Friday, Chance claimed her fourth school record at the 2023 University of South Carolina Indoor Open to go with her two Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Cross Country Championships.
 
Chance set a new school record in the women's indoor 3000 meter event, running a 11:04.61 eclipsing the previous record by nearly a full minute—a time of 12:16.17 set by Ya'Mia Cystrunk on Feb. 16, 2019—finishing in fourth place.
 
The senior also holds school records in the indoor 1 mile, the outdoor 1500m and the distance medley.
 
Several other Lady Tigers had strong outings on Friday as well. Ravyn Cynstrunk set a new personal best in the 200m dash running a 25.59. Sadrea Mabry ran an 8.21 in the preliminaries of the 60m dash for a new personal best.
 
Three newcomers set college bests on Friday. Kinya Jackson set two new personal best records, running a 28.51 in the 200m and a 1:11.35 in the 400m. Jeainna Bryant ran a 9.22 in the 60m hurdles for her college best in the event.
 
In the field, newcomer A'Mijya Dudley finished fourth in the high jump with a 1.50m mark for a new personal best in the event. Kennedy Spears tied her with her teammate in the same event.
 
On the men's side, Winfred Porter led the Tigers on the track. He finished in second place in the finals of the 60m dash with a 6.81. He ran a 6.82 for a second place finish in the prelims of the same event.
 
In the 60m hurdles, Nyzaveon Thompson ran an 8.52 to finish in ninth place.
 
Freshman Aidan Holliman led the Tigers in the field with a seventh place finish in the high jump, recording a 1.90m effort. Holliman set a new school record (2.01m) in the event on Feb. 5 at the USA Jaguar Invite. Cameron Edwards finished right behind Holliman with a 1.85m jump.
 
Dwayne Chenault set a new personal best in the long jump with an 11th place finish and a 6.48m jump.
 
Friday's event closed out the indoor track and field regular season for the Tigers. Indoor track is not an SIAC sponsored, so the Tigers do not have a conference title to compete for. There is a possibility of a post-season in the sport, if the Tigers can qualify for the NCAA Division II National Indoor Championship.
 
Savannah State men's and women's track and field will open the outdoor season—an SIAC sponsored sport—next weekend, Feb. 25, with the annual Savannah State Eyeopener. All events start at 11 a.m. at Theodore A. Wright Stadium and admission is free.
