Tigers Drop Key SIAC Game To Edward Waters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.– Savannah State men's basketball dropped a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game to Edward Waters, 70-77, on Saturday in the final stretch of the regular season.

The Tigers moved to 15-8 overall and 13-6 in the SIAC schedule, falling out of first place in the SIAC East Division where Benedict leads with a 14-5 conference record.

Early on, Edward Waters took an 11-4 lead behind a three-pointer from Adnan Hussein. But Savannah State stopped the bleeding with a 7-0 run from the 14:08 mark to the 13:07 mark to tie the game at 11 all.

Edward Waters responded by regaining the lead and holding onto it. At the half, they led 34-25. The home team hit 54.5% of their field goals while SSU managed a 24.2% clip from the field in the opening half.

The home team kept the pressure on in the second half. With 3:04 to play, they led by 14, 70-56. Savannah State got some baskets to drop late in the game. Zion Davis hit a field goal and then tacked on a free-throw to cut the home team's lead to five points with 28 seconds to play.

But two good free-throws from Edward Waters in the final seconds sealed up their fifth win of the season. In the team's first meeting this year, on Jan. 21, Savannah State won 80-78 in Tiger Arena.

Ayjay Plain led the field with 20 points on the night, going 10-for-11 at the free-throw line. Davis, a true freshman, tacked on a season-high 18 points while Eleik Bowles scored 11 in the loss.

Savannah State closes out the regular season on the road. They face Albany State on Feb. 18 and Fort Valley State on Feb. 21.

The 2023 SIAC Championship Tournament hosted by Savannah State is set for Feb. 25 – March 4 in Tiger Arena. Tickets are now on sale at thesiac.com.
