King, Plain Lead SSU In Loss At St. Leo

Box Score ST. LEO, Fla.- Qua King and Ayjay Plain both scored 15 points in Savannah State's 73-61 setback to St. Leo which took place on November 11, 2023 at Marion Bowman Center.
 
In addition to their 15 points, King made 7-of-9 free throw attempts and had 6 rebounds and 3 steals while Plain added 6 assists and 5 steals while making three 3-pointers.
 
The loss dropped Savannah State to 0-2 on the young season.
 
St. Leo led 4-2 but a jumper by Chancellor Wilson tied the game a 4 with 18:19 showing on the clock.
 
The Lions responded with 14 unanswered points to go ahead 18-4.
 
SSU answered with a pair of runs of their own.
 
A 11-5 spurt pulled the Tigers within 23-15 with 9:22 left and a 8-0 run by Savannah State which was capped by a 3-pointer from Austin Lewis made the score 27-23 at the 7:22 mark.
 
Savannah State trailed by five with inside of a minute remaining in the first period but the Lions scored the final two points of the half and went into intermission down 39-32.
 
The second half started with SSU receiving a jumper from King followed a 3-pointer by Plain to slice the St. Leo lead to 39-37.
 
With the teams trading baskets, a jumper by Jordan Mikel put the Tigers down by one at 44-43 with 14:12 left in regulation.
 
St. Leo answered with 10 consecutive points to extend their advantage to 54-43 with 10:36 left.
 
The Lions' lead grew to 14 but two free throws from Warner Davis and a pair of jumpers from Plain and Mikel pulled SSU within eight with just over five minutes remaining.
 
St. Leo answered which allowed their lead to grow to 15 with 3:31 remaining but a 3-pointer by Davis with 2:48 left made it a ten point contest at 69-59.
 
Savannah State (0-2) would not get any closer as they would lose by a dozen.
 
Davis came off the SSU bench to contribute a career-high 12 points and six rebounds while Mikel had 10 points.
 
SSU scored 18 points off of 19 St. Leo turnovers while getting 16 points in the paint and 10 second chance points. Savannah State only had 9 turnovers in the game.
 
After shooting 29.7 from the floor in the opening half, the Tigers improved to shoot 40.7 percent from the field in the second half.
 
Kanon Koster had 24 points for St. Leo (1-1).
 
In search of their first win, Savannah State will play USC-Beaufort in Savannah's Enmarket Arena on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Savannah Hoops Invitational.
