SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State men's basketball team has released their schedule for the 2023-34 season.
The schedule features 12 home dates as well as a contest against first-year program South Carolina-Beaufort.
Set to begin his 20th campaign as the Tigers head coach, Horace Broadnax and company will start the season on the road with non-conference match ups with Florida Southern (November 10) and St. Leo (Nov. 11). Both Florida Southern and St. Leo compete in the Sunshine Conference.
"The Sunshine Conference is probably one of the toughest or highly ranked conferences in the country. We will get an early idea of who we are early on and see what we need to work on to get better," said Broadnax.
On Nov. 21, SSU will play South Carolina-Beaufort in Savannah's EnMarket Arena as part of the Savannah Hoops Invitational.
Broadnax hopes this won't be the last meeting between the programs.
"Hopefully, we can keep playing them in the future to establish a rivalry."
The Tigers, who are two years removed from winning the SIAC Tournament and earning a trip to the Division II National Tournament, will start their conference slate at home against Kentucky State on Nov. 25 and Central State on Nov. 27.
Broadnax knows that winning a conference title won't be easy but his Tigers will be up for the challenge. "The SIAC is a very competitive league and anyone can beat anyone on any given night."
Following a road game at Miles on December 4, Savannah State will return home to face Tuskegee (Dec. 16) and Spring Hill (Dec. 18) to end the 2023 portion of their schedule.
Road dates at LeMoyne-Owen (January 4) and Lane (Jan. 6) start off the 2024 half of the schedule. Savannah State will break from conference play on Jan. 6 when they host Morris but will resume SIAC action with road trips to in-state rivals Fort Valley State (Jan. 13) and Albany State (Jan. 15).
Morehouse and Clark Atlanta will visit Tiger Arena on Jan. 20 and 22 respectively followed by away games at Edward Waters (Jan. 27), Allen (Jan. 29) and Benedict (Jan. 31).
Savannah State will host Benedict (February 3) and Allen (Feb. 5) in early February before road games to the capital city to play Clark Atlanta (Feb. 10) and Morehouse (Feb. 12).
Edward Waters will make the trip up I-95 north to play SSU on Feb. 17.
After a road trip at Morris on Feb. 19, the Tigers will close out the regular season at home against Albany State (Feb. 24) and Fort Valley State (Feb. 26).
Savannah State ended the 2022-23 season with a 15-11 overall record while going 13-8 in conference play.
