Tigers Move To Top Of SIAC East With Win Over Fort Valley State

SAVANNAH, Ga .— In a battle for the top of the conference standings, Savannah State roared to life in the second half to beat Fort Valley State, 64-53, on Saturday.

The Tigers improved to 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) schedule, taking sole possession of first place in the SIAC East Division, while Fort Valley dropped to 7-8 overall and 5-3.

Savannah State trailed for most of the opening half as Fort Valley worked the inside and got shots to drop. Tigers' top scorer Eleik Bowles struggled on the night and the Tigers shot a dismal 31.3% from the field, hitting only 10-of-32 shots to open the game.

Javonte Landy hit two good free-throws with 3:11 to play in the opening quarter, tying the game at 24-all and sparking a run for the Tigers. Elavian Bowles would follow that with a good 3-pointer, lifting the Tigers to their first lead of the game.

Over the final three minutes of the first half, SSU went on an 8-3 run for a 30-27 lead into the locker room. Fort Valley would never have the lead again.

Following a milquetoast opening from both teams in the second half, the Tigers broke away with a 15-3 run a five minute span, capped by a good field goal from Andrew Okorodudu that lifted SSU to a 12-point lead. Down the stretch, the Tigers went up by as much as 17 points en-route to the fourth consecutive victory.
