ATLANTA, Ga. – Savannah State closes a three-game road swing this week in Atlanta for an historic matchup with one of their oldest rivals in the 120th year of football for the Tigers.

Savannah State and Morehouse College have been playing each other since 1927. The last two games—2019 and 2021—went Savannah State's way and the overall series leans favorable for the Tigers at 15-13 SSU.

This will be the first meeting of new Savannah State Head Coach Aaron Kelton and veteran Morehouse Head Coach Rich Freeman. Freeman is 1-2 against the Tigers since taking the helm in Atlanta in 2007.

The Tigers return to Theodore A. Wright Stadium for back-to-back home games after this week. They face Kentucky State on Oct. 1 (6 p.m.) and then celebrate Homecoming on Oct. 8 against Virginia Lynchburg (3 p.m.).

LAST GAME
Savannah State faced Benedict in prime time on ESPNU last Thursday. Following a scoreless first half, a tough defensive battle, Benedict pulled away with a 10-0 lead in the third quarter. They tacked on 14 more points in the fourth as Savannah State's offense sputtered and they littered the field with costly turnovers and penalties. Benedict, led by former Savannah State All-SIAC offensive lineman Chennis Berry, sealed up the 24-6 win on home turf.

TOP OFFENSIVE PLAYERS
Last week's lost to Benedict all but solidified a shift for the Savannah State offense going into this week's game. While starting quarterback JT Hartage showed promise against Benedict, he struggled to finish. It was third-string quarterback Jadon Adams who scored Savannah State's only points in the game. Adams has earned a starting role into week four following three great weeks coming off the bench.

Look for a different offense this week with Adams in command. The RPO style, will be definitely be RPO for Adams and company. The mobile quarterback not only leads the passing stats for the Savannah State quarterback core, he leads the rushing stats for the entire team with 174 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns.

But when the ball is in the air, look for #8 Brent Carr, #15 DeMarion Colbert, or #17 Da'Shun Mitchell to make a big play. Mitchell has 98 receiving yards on eight catches while Colbert has 92 yards on seven catches and a touchdown reception. Carr has two touchdown receptions—both from Adams—and 54 yards receiving.

On the ground, you will see more from power back #1 Shamarcus Poole and freshmen #32 Joseph Hampton this week. Poole as 106 yards this year on 26 carries and Hampton has racked up 94 yards on 18 carries. #7 Jordan Grant could be a threat on the ground as well.

TOP DEFENSIVE PLAYERS
Savannah State's defensive line has been tough all year, keeping pressure on offenses and forcing quick plays and turnovers. That is thanks to a returning core that includes #0 Makenly Newbill, who has 12.0 tackles this season, and #49 Jonathan Glover, along side #90 Tony Rountree, Jr.

In the backfield, #48 Tavare Brewton, #23 Amiri Johnson and #4 Latrelvin Blackamore are the numbers to watch. Johnson had a great game against Benedict with 10 tackles in the loss. He leads the defense this season with 18.0 tackles. Brewton, a freshman, has been stellar as well with 14.0 tackles this year.

LAST MATCHUP WITH MC
Savannah State put up 20 quick points in the first quarter on Morehouse on Sept. 25, 2021 in front of 4,000 plus fans in Theodore A. Wright Stadium. They tacked on seven more in the second quarter, holding the Maroon Tigers scoreless in the first half. The first-half blitz was enough for Savannah State's 29-10 win after Morehouse outscored them 10-2 in the second half.

OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORT
Morehouse is a very good team this year, despite their 0-3 record. Those three losses were to two of the best teams in NCAA Division II (West Alabama and West Georgia) and an NCAA Division I team (Howard).
Veteran backs #41 Daylon Land, #3 Joel Girtman and #14 Dadrian Lyman will give the Savannah State offense problems. The Morehouse offense likes to pass. Veteran quarterback Derrach West has 290 passing yards this year, completing 36 of his 64 attempts.
