Volleyball Picks Up 3-1 Win In Fort Valley

FORT VALLEY, Ga. –  Savannah State volleyball, in the middle of a four-game road swing, picked up their first win of the 2022 season on Thursday with a 3-1 victory over Fort Valley State.

The Lady Tigers improved to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic (SIAC) action in the key SIAC East Division matchup. Savannah State is in the middle of the pack in the early SIAC standings. Albany State leads the side with a 4-0 conference record.

In the first set, Savannah State opened with a commanding 6-1 run and didn't let up. But Fort Valley had a late spark that nearly upset Savannah State's momentum.

Trailing 12-23, the Wildcats went on a 7-1 run to cut the Lady Tigers lead to 24-19. But Jasmine Nettles secured the 25-19 win for Savannah State on a kill with an assist from Kloe Ludy.

The late first-set spurt from Fort Valley triggered some momentum for the home team into the second set. By the 25th serve, they lead 14-11 and held onto that lead down the stretch, tying the match at one-all with a 25-19 set win.

But Nettles shifted the momentum again in the third set with four straight points off serves—which included two kills from Langston and a service ace—for an 8-4 lead early on.

Fort Valley fired back over the next few serves, tying the match at 14-all. Langston then served up four consecutive points for the Lady Tigers, that included a kill from Allena Norton, and three from Dorothea Ruffin. Another kill from Ruffin pushed Savannah State out to a 20-15 lead. The Lady Tigers tacked on the final five points for a 25-19 set win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

Langston again started things off good for Savannah State in the fourth set with three consecutive serves for points. By the 15th serve, the Lady Tigers led 10-5. They improved to an 18-9 lead, forcing the home team into a timeout. With all the momentum, Savannah State sealed up their first match win with a 25-17 set win.

Langston led the Lady Tigers offense with 13 kills. Ruffin tacked on 10. Ludy and Jessee Grubesic led in digs with 15 each. Nettles had a stellar game with nine kills and 14 digs.

Savannah State travels to Albany, Georgia on Saturday to play Miles College and Tuskegee in SIAC crossover matches. They return home on Sept. 20 to face SIAC East Division leader Albany State in Tiger Arena. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
