Lady Tigers Fall To Claflin, 1-3

CLAFLIN, S.C. – In their final non-conference match of the season, Savannah State volleyball played a good Claflin team tough on Monday, falling 1-3.

The match opened a four-game road swing for the Lady Tigers as they look for their first win of the young season.

Savannah State has seen good things from its returners this season. The newcomers are stepping up to claim their spots on the court.

Junior returner Destinee Langston led the Lady Tigers in the stats with 13 kills. Freshman Allena Norton registered 12 kills in the loss. Newcomer Jessee Grubesic played in all four sets, and recorded 22 assists and 10 digs. Returner Kloe Ludy led in digs with 33.

Set one was a back-and-forth battle until late when Claflin pulled ahead with a 20-15 lead on a kill from Taneja Robinson. Caylen Samuel set up Norton for a kill to cut the home team's lead to 21-18, but it would be the last offensive run for Savannah State. Claflin put together a 4-0 spurt to seal up a 25-18 win.

The Lady Tigers fired back with strong second set. Following an 8-8 tie, Claflin took three of the next four points, but Langston answered with back-to-back kills to open a key run for Savannah State. Norton added a kill two serves later to lift the Lady Tigers to a 13-11 lead and force the home team into a timeout.

Out of the timeout, Grubesic scored with a service ace then had a bad set. The back-and-forth continued. With a 21-17 lead, Savannah State put together a nice tit-for-tat run at the end to seal up a 25-22 set win, capped by a kill from Norton on the final point.

Claflin answered the close loss with two dominate sets, winning set three 25-16 and set four 25-16 for the 3-1 victory. Claflin moved to 4-0 on the season. Savannah State fell to 0-5.

Savannah State returns to action on Thursday night with a 6 p.m. match at Fort Valley State—a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division match.

On Saturday, they play two matches in Albany against Miles College and Tuskegee. They return to Tiger Arena on Sept. 20 to face Albany State in a rematch
