Tigers Win Two In Battle With Albany State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State baseball has cruised through their conference schedule this season—sweeping seven of their eight three-game series this year—but faced a tough battle with Albany State in a home series this weekend.

The Tigers and Golden Rams entered the series battling for the top spot in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) standings, as well as a regular season title.

Savannah State has been on a 23-game winning streak—last losing a conference game on Feb. 19 against Kentucky State. But Albany State has done well with their SIAC schedule this season too, entering the weekend with only three losses.

Savannah State picked up two wins in the series, but fell in the final game. The two wins knocked Albany State out of contention for a regular season title, and left the Tigers at the top of the SIAC standings with a 25-2 conference record. They are 30-10 overall this season.

Next weekend, Savannah State closes the regular season schedule with a three-game series against Benedict, their final SIAC games. Spring Hill College is the last remaining team in contention for a regular season title with a 20-4 conference mark. Savannah State needs one win next week against Benedict to secure the regular season title.

In game one of the series with Albany State this weekend, on Friday night, the Tigers faced the visitor's best pitcher and nearly handed him his eighth win of the season.

Albany State led 5-3 into the top of the eighth inning. Pitching in relief for Savannah State, Rahmir Vaughn got two outs, then a walk. With the runner in scoring position, Vaughn struck out the next batter to give the Tigers some breathing room.

Still trailing, Vaughn registered two more strikeouts to end the inning and strand one Albany State runner. Into the bottom of the final inning, Savannah State had the momentum, but still trailed by two runs.

Calvin Rucker got things started with a single to center to open the frame. Then Omar Almodovar singled to left. With two runners on and no outs, Jaden Oden was bunting. He hit a little dribbler to the left of the mound to reach safely.

Back at the top of the order, with loaded bases and no outs, the No. 3 best hitter in NCAA Division II came up. Earlier in the game, Joe Smith was walked, but with loaded basses and the game on the line, Albany State had no choice but to pitch to him.

Smith blasted a double deep to left field, as all three runs scored in a walk-off 6-5 win for Savannah State.

Jeremiah Reddell was tagged with his third pitching loss after 8.0 innings of work for Albany State. He allowed six earned runs on nine hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Vaughn earned his second pitching win of the season after 2.0 innings of work. He allowed no earned runs on one hit with one walk and four strikeouts.

Savannah State carried the momentum over to the second game of the series on Saturday. Enrico Peele pitched a complete game gem for the Tigers as they roared to a 12-1 rout of Albany State.

After 7.0 innings of work, Peele allowed one earned run on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts for his 10th win of the season. Peele is ranked No. 1 in the SIAC and No. 2 all of NCAA Division II in pitching victories this season.

At the plate, Smith led the Tigers, going 3-for-4 with another double. Jaden Oden was 3-for-3 as well and Dwayne Franklin went 3-for-5 with three RBI.

In the final game of the series on Sunday, Savannah State was en-route to yet another SIAC series sweep. Into the fifth inning, the Tigers led 4-2. But Albany State found some room to work in the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits for a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Savannah State fired back, taking advantage of three walks that put Andrai Wright, Phillip Woullard, Jr. and Champion Robbins on base. Wright scored on a wild pitch and later Woullard scored on a ground-out to tie the game at 6-6.

Following a scoreless sixth inning, where both teams combined to strand three runners, the game remained tied into the final frame of the seven-inning game.

In the top of the seventh, Albany State plated a single run on a wild pitch that lifted them into the lead and would eventually seal up a 7-6 win for the visitors, breaking the Tigers 23-game conference win streak.
