Baseball Clinches SIAC Regular Season Title

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State baseball swept a doubleheader with Benedict College on Friday to clinch the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Regular Season Championship.

The Tigers concluded the final three-game series against Benedict on Saturday with a 22-run rout to finish the regular season 32-10 and 28-2 in SIAC play, statistically securing the title with a .933 winning percentage in conference action.

Savannah State has cruised through their conference schedule this season, sweeping eight of their 10 three-game series'. They lost the first SIAC game of the season to Kentucky State on Feb. 19, then proceeded to win the next 25 before dropping one to Albany State on April 23.

With the title, Savannah State has secured the No. 1 seed into the 2022 SIAC Baseball Championship, set for May 5-8 in Albany, Ga. Unlike other sports in the SIAC, baseball is not divided into east and west divisions. Winning the regular season title comes with having the best winning percentage in the entire conference.

In game one on Friday, Savannah State lead-off man Joe Smith blasted a solo home run to set the tone. Smith is hitting .473 this season to lead the team, the SIAC and all of NCAA Division II in batting average. Smith is tied with Queens' Louis Antos for the top spot in Division II.

Savannah State rolled to a 15-4 route of Benedict in game one, as one of the top hitting lineups in Division II racked up 13 hits. The top 11 hitters for the Tigers are all batting over .300 this season.

Jose Santiago picked up his ninth win after 5.0 innings of work. Santiago—who has earned two SIAC Pitcher of the Week awards this year—allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

From the plate, Andrai Wright and Jaden Oden were both 3-for-4. Wright had a double and three RBI while Oden recorded five RBI.

In game two on Friday, Savannah State pushed out to an early lead with runs in the first and third inning. Into the seventh inning, they led 3-1. Cameron Diaz platted Wright on a sacrifice fly to center in the top of the seventh.

Later, Gabriel Patxot scored two runs on a single that platted Phillip Woullard and Champion Robbins, lifting the Tigers to a 7-1 lead. Benedict tacked on a single run in the bottom of the frame as Savannah State sealed up their 27th conference win, 7-2.

Enrico Peele picked up his 11th win of the season, pitching a complete game. The veteran allowed two earned runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Peele—who has been named SIAC Pitcher of the Week three times this year—is No. 1 in the SIAC and No. 2 in Division II in pitching victories. He trails only Southern Arkansas' Jeremy Adorno who has 12 wins.

From the plate, Robbins led the Tigers, going 2-for-2 with a two-run home run in the third inning. Patxot was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI.

In the final game on Saturday, Jared Showalter pitched 7.0 brilliant innnings to pick up his ninth win of the season as the Tigers routed Benedict 23-1. Showalter allowed no earned runs on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

On the offensive side, Savannah State took advantage of seven errors by Benedict and racked up 17 hits. Leading the offensive charge was designated hitter Calvin Rucker who went 5-for-5 with five RBI, blasting three home runs.  Diaz went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two doubles, while Patxot went 2-for-3 with five RBI and a home run.
