Tigers’ Win Streak Snapped

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Savannah State saw its 13-game winning streak come to a screeching halt this weekend in a three-game, non-conference series with Edward Waters.

On Friday, the Tigers hosted Edward Waters in Savannah for an extra-inning battle to open the series.

The Tigers got off to a rough start. Edward Waters put on two runners off back-to-back infield errors. They only managed to score one run in the first, but the momentum was clearly in their favor. The visitors tacked on another run in the second for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the Tigers started to shift out of the bad start. Lead-off man Joseph Smith singled to reach and then was scored on a triple from Dwayne Franklin that cut Edward Waters lead to 2-1.

Both teams scored two runs apiece in the fifth inning, before scoreless sixth and seventh innings.

Into the eighth inning, Edward Waters led 4-3. The visitors managed a single hit, but the Savannah State defense stepped up with a 436 pickoff for the final out to keep them extending their lead.

With one out showing in the bottom of the eighth, Phillip Woullard walked and Gabriel Patxot reached on an error. Champion Robbins then drove in the tying run on a single to right field that scored Woullard.

Savannah State forced Edward Waters into a three-up, three-down to open the ninth inning in the tied game. In the bottom of the ninth, Smith walked and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Franklin hit a flyout to right pushing Smith to scoring position with two outs.

Desmore Joseph, pitch hitting, hit a little pop up to shortstop for the final out forcing extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, Edward Waters scored two runs on three hits for a 6-4 lead. Savannah State continued to battle in the bottom of the frame. Andrai Wright walked. Woullard reached on a fielder's choice that snagged Wright at second.

Patxot sparked a chance at a late rally with a double to left that put Woullard in scoring position. Robbins then echoed his work in the eighth with a sacrifice fly that scored Woullard and put Patxot, the tying run, on third.

With two outs and the tying run on third, Derek Rivera hit into a ground out to second base to end the game as Edward Waters squeezed out the 6-5 win.

Matthew Terril was tagged with his second pitching loss of the season after 1.0 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout.

Caden Hutchinson, pitching in relief, earned a win after 2.0 innings on the mound. He allowed one earned run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout.

On Saturday, Savannah State traveled to Jacksonville for a doubleheader to close out the series.

Edward Waters continued the momentum from first game on Friday with a 12-2 win in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader, racking up 17 hits against the Tigers.

In the final game of the series, Savannah State attempted a late rally after falling behind early. Trailing 7-3 into the seventh inning, Patxot sparked an offensive push with a double to right. With two outs showing, Patxot stole third and then scored on an error that saw Cooper Le'Tellier reach.

Later, Jaden Oden singled to score LeTellier and Hakeem Smith singled to score Calvin Rucker who walked, cutting Edward Waters lead to 7-6. But a strikeout on the next at-bat for Savannah State ended the game with Edward Waters picking up the series sweep.

Savannah State continues to lead the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) with a 23-1 record. The Tigers are 28-9 overall this season and are ranked No. 8 in the NCBWA South Region NCAA Division II poll.

They close out the home schedule this weekend with their final SIAC series. This year, the Tigers have swept 7 of 8 SIAC series this year. Their last SIAC loss was to Kentucky State on Feb. 19.

They face Albany State in a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and then will host the Golden Rams on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Prior to Saturday's game, Savannah State will celebrate 11 seniors on Senior Day.
