Tigers Slip Past Voorhees In A Bullpen Battle

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In a battle of bullpens, Savannah State baseball pulled out an 18-14 win over Voorhees in a mid-week, non-conference matchup on Tiger Field.

The Tigers tossed eight pitchers at Voorhees while the visitor's put up three against Savannah State in a game that saw a combined 30 hits—15 from each team.

Voorhees opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Tigers were undeterred. With one out, Dwayne Franklin and Cameron Diaz each walked to reach and then stole to get into scoring position.

Andrai Wright blasted a single to center, platting both runners to open a long inning. Savannah State racked up three more hits and seven more runs in the inning for a 9-2 advantage into the second inning.

Voorhees responded in the top of the second, leading off with back-to-back doubles that opened a five run, six-hit inning, cutting the Tigers lead to 9-7.

Leading off for Savannah State in the bottom of the second, Gabriel Patxot singled to reach. Later, Calvin Rucker doubled. Omar Almodovar tripled and Joe Smith singled en-route to a six hit, six run-inning for the Tigers. By the third, Savannah State led 15-7 and both teams had already sent two pitchers to the mound.

Voorhees added a single run in the fourth, but otherwise both teams were scoreless form the third to the sixth inning as Savannah State's deep bullpen tossed three different pitchers at the visitors. In the seventh, Voorhees, facing freshman pitcher Gerald Toledo, tacked on three more runs off four hits.

Against Voorhees reliever Elijah Baker, Savannah State put up three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh behind a hit from freshman Cooper LeTellier, and walks from Franklin and Hakem Smith.

Leading 18-11 into the eighth inning, Savannah State went to closers Jackson Hickox and Solomon Masters to finish off the visitors. But three costly walks, a wild pitch and a hit platted three more runs for the visitors as they attempted a late rally.

In the top of the ninth, Savannah State led 18-14 and Ramhir Vaughn hit the mound for the Tigers to finish it off. After giving up a hit and a fielder's choice, Vaughn registered back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and give the Tigers their 28th win of the season.

Starter Bryan Valdes-Masson earned his first pitching win of the season for Savannah State, going 1.1 innings. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
