Tigers Sweep Spring Hill In SIAC Series

MOBILE, Ala. – In their first road trip of the season, Savannah State swept Spring Hill College in a three-game, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), series.

The Tigers improved to 12-5 overall and 8-1 in conference.

In game one of the series, Jose Santiago picked a killer 8.0 innings. The sophomore right-hander faced 32 batters, allowing two earned runs on three hits with five walks and a season-high 12 strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Following five scoreless innings, Savannah State put up the first run in the top of the sixth. Dwayne Franklin opened the inning with a single, and Cameron Diaz followed with a double to right field. Franklin got caught in the run down on third while Andrai Wright reached on a fielder's choice that attempted to get Diaz out. Instead Diaz scored for a 1-0 lead. Spring Hill responded in the bottom of the sixth as the lead-off man homered to start the inning.

Tied at 1-1, the beginning of the eighth was wild. Champion Robbins got things started with a single that pushed Wright to third after he walked. Derek Rivera struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch, pushing Robbins to third and scoring Wright. Zion Rolland bunted but reached on a fielding error as Robbins cross the plate. Rivera later scored on an error giving the Tigers a 4-1 lead.

Spring Hill put up one more run in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers took game one 4-2.

Game two was a different story. Instead of winning on sloppy errors, it was straight up good baseball from Savannah State. The Tigers racked up 17 hits and scored 13 runs to rout Spring Hill 13-9.

Joe Smith led from the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Gabriel Paxtot went 3-for-5 with one RBI while Franklin and Wright each went 2-for-5.

Enrico Peele, a two-time SIAC Pitcher of the Week, picked up his fourth win of the season after 5.2 innings of work. He allowed three earned runs on three hits with six walks and five strikeouts.

In game three, Spring Hill picked up a 2-1 lead headed into the second inning. The score held through three scoreless innings.

Omar Almodovar opened the top of the fifth with a walk. Smith followed with a single to left and then Franklin blasted a single to left as well, loading the bases. Diaz shot a single through the left side, scoring Almodovar and the Tigers were off.

Wright walked to score Smith. Then Patxot walked to score Franklin pushing Savannah State out to a 4-2 lead at the end of the inning. Spring Hill put up one run in the bottom of the fifth and then Savannah State plated one more in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Diaz that plated Smith who reached on a single.

The Tigers sealed up the series sweep with a 5-3 win in the final game.

Jared Showalter picked up his third pitching win of the season after 6.0 innings of work. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts against 28 batters.

Savannah State hosts a three-game SIAC series with Clark Atlanta at home this weekend. First pitch is set for Saturday, March 12 at 1 p.m. on Tiger Field.
