Tigers Sweep Third SIAC Series; Lead SIAC East Division

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State baseball is churning on all cylinders.

Midway through the season, the Tigers improved to 15-5 this weekend and 11-1 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action with a three-game series sweep of Clark Atlanta.

The Tigers opened with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. In game one, Jose Santiago pitched a gem to lead Savannah State to a 10-0 win. Santiago went a full 7.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Savannah State opened with the game two runs in the bottom of the first, and then tacked on three more in the second and another in the third. They sealed up the 10-point shutout with four more runs in the sixth.

Joe Smith led the Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI including a triple. Cameron Diaz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Gabriel Patxot went 2-for-3.

In game two, Clark Atlanta struck first. After two scoreless innings, Andrew Gaskin blasted a solo home run to lift the visitors to a lead. Clark Atlanta pushed out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles from Daniel Gay and Deandre Swift.

Leading off for Savannah State in the fourth, Smith went yard to open the inning, cutting the visitor's lead to a single run.

Until the fifth inning, Clark Atlanta's Lorenzo Petersen was pitching a gem. He allowed a single run on two hits through four innings with four strikeouts.

But Savannah State's offense got a spark in the bottom of the fifth. Champion Robbins singled to open. Patxot followed with his own single and both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Zion Rolland singled to score both but was caught in a rundown for the first out.

Omar Almodovar, Smith and Diaz all registered hits later in the inning to help plate three more runs for the Tigers. The Tigers put up five total runs on six hits in the fifth for a 6-2 lead.

Clark Atlanta managed one more run in the seventh, but were stifled by Savannah State relievers Bryan Valdes-Masson, Solomon Masters and Matthew Terril—the latter of which received a save for his work in the final inning.

Peele earned his fifth pitching win of the season, going 5.0 innings. He gave up two earned runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout. Petersen was tagged with the loss after giving up three earned runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

In game three of the series, on Sunday, Savannah State was the one to strike first, scoring a single run in the bottom of the first. By the end of the third, they led 3-1. And their offense would keep producing with four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth for a 13-1 rout of Clark Atlanta.

Jared Showalter picked up his fourth pitching win of the season after 6.0 innings on the mound. Showalter allowed no earned runs on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Smith again led the Tigers at the plate. The lead-off man went 4-for-4 with two RBI, a double and an in-the-park home run. Dwayne Franklin batted over .500 going 3-for-4 with an RBI including a double.

Savannah State hosts Embry-Riddle in a non-conference showdown on Tuesday before heading to Atlanta to face Morehouse College in a three-game SIAC series.
