Lady Tigers Pick Up Seven Wins At SIAC Roundup

MOBILE, Ala. – Savannah State women's tennis went on a tear this week.  

The Lady Tigers picked up seven consecutive conference wins over the weekend at the second Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Roundup in Mobile, Alabama.  

Savannah State improved to 13-5 overall and 11-3 in SIAC action heading into the final game of the season and the 2022 SIAC Championship.

The Lady Tigers played eight matches over four days in Mobile, Alabama. They opened with an 0-4 loss to Benedict on Wednesday but that would be the last dropped match of the week.

Savannah State then rolled through the next few days, with wins against Tuskegee (4-0) and LeMoyne-Owen (6-0) on Thursday, Spring Hill (4-3), Fort Valley State (5-2 and 5-2), and Clark Atlanta (4-0) on Friday, and concluded with a 4-2 win over Albany State on Saturday.

Gabrielle Benn was flawless in the first court of singles action for Savannah State. She beat Tuskegee's Brianna Harden 6-0, 6-0; Spring Hill's Brooke Herrin 6-0, 6-1; Clark Atlanta's Kristen Blount 6-1, 6-2; and Albany State's Asia Raulerson 7-6 (10-5) and 6-1. On the season, the newcomer is 11-1 with one unfinished match.

Playing in the first, second and third court of singles, Amarlia Benn went 5-1 over the eight games with two unfinished matches. In the third court, she beat Tuskegee's Mikiah Stephenson 6-0 and 6-3. Against Spring Hill's Johanna Winkler, in the third court, she won by retirement. In the first court against Fort Valley State she beat Valerie Dorellen 6-3 and 6-2. In the third court against Albany State, she defeated Doylisha Copeland 6-1 and 6-2.

Playing in the fourth and sixth courts of singles play over the week, Sunzahra Banks went 3-1 with two unfinished matches. Banks beat LeMoyne-Owen's Gracie Hampton 6-0 and 6-0; Spring Hill's Carmen Tidwell 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 in the sixth court and Clark Atlanta's Zaire Lamb 6-0, 6-0 also in the sixth court.

Savannah State will play its final regular season match on April 2 at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia before heading to the 2022 SIAC Women's Tennis Championship April 11-12 in Peachtree City, Ga.
