Tigers Drop Battle With Embry-Riddle

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In a neck-and-neck battle to the end, Savannah State and Embry-Riddle took it to the final inning in a non-conference NCAA South Region showdown on Tiger Field.

Into the ninth inning, tied at 5-5, Jackson Hickox opened the inning with a strikeout, then followed that with a forced flyout. With two outs, Hickox walked the next two batters to put the go-ahead run into scoring position.

Embry-Riddle—out of the Sunshine State Conference—took advantage of the mistake. Garrett Bogart—who transferred from Savannah State to Embry-Riddle—singled to right field, scoring two runs. Later, the Eagles tacked on a third run on a wild pitch for an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the frame.

Savannah State's Dwayne Franklin and Cameron Diaz each blasted single's to open the bottom of the ninth. But a flyout and a double-play sealed up the win for the visitors.

The Tigers opened the game with two runs on four hits in the first inning. Embry-Riddle responded with two of their own runs in the second. Jaden Oden homered in the third to score Gabriel Patxot who reached on a single, tying the game into the middle innings.

Hickox was tagged with his second loss of the season after 3.2 innings of work in relief. He allowed two earned runs on no hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Tyler Stufano, pitching in relief for Embry-Riddle, was given the win after 1.0 innings of work. He allowed no runs on no hits with no walks and no strikeouts. Joe Balsam picked up his third save of the year after holding Savannah State scoreless in the final inning.

Savannah State returns to conference action this weekend against Morehouse College. The three-game road series in Atlanta kicks-off on Friday at 3 p.m.
