Tigers Fall In Close SIAC Battle With Albany State

ALBANY, Ga. – It came down to the final few seconds on Monday as Savannah State had the game-winning basket reversed on a whistle, falling 55-58 to Albany State in a big Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) match.

Avery Joyner hit a free-throw with 56 seconds in the game to cut Albany State's lead to 56-55. Following a missed jumper on the home team's next possession, Savannah State took a timeout with 31 seconds on the clock to draw up a play.

Out of the timeout, Trey DeLoach scored what would have been the winning dunk, but the referees called an offensive foul on Larson Ashford, reversing the basket and giving Albany State two free throws. Malik Parker drained both to lift Albany State to a 58-55 lead.

With three seconds to play, Marcus Scott attempted a tying three-pointer, but missed and the final score stood. Scott led the entire field with a season-high 24 points. Joyner and DeLoach each scored seven points in the loss.

The Tigers fall to 7-10 overall and 5-6 in conference play as they head down the final stretch of the regular season.

Savannah State returns to the hardwood on February 9 against Fort Valley State in a rescheduled game that was originally supposed to take place on Jan. 15. Tip-off in Fort Valley is set for 7 p.m.

The Tigers return to home court on Saturday, Feb. 12 with a non-conference game against SIAC provisional team Allen University and then follow that with another key SIAC home game against Benedict on Monday, Feb. 14.
