Tigers Down Fort Valley In Double Overtime

FORT VALLEY STATE, Ga. –  A couple of clutch free-throws and a buzzer-beating jumper from Savannah State helped the Tigers claim victory in a thrilling double overtime, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) battle with Fort Valley State.

With 3:16 to play in regulation, Savannah State trailed by four points, 57-61, following a dunk from Ty'Reek Johnson. Eleik Bowles answered with a short jumper to cut that lead to only two points with 2:10 to play.

Following a missed shot and a turnover, Savannah State regained possession with 17 seconds ticketing away. Daryl Richardson was fouled by Quincy Young to send him to the line. Two good-free throws later and the game was tied at 61 all. Johnson got a steal, but couldn't pull off a shot and the game headed into extra minutes.

Savannah State again trailed by two points with 3:48 to play in the first overtime following a dunk from Fort Valley's Joe Williams. But Williams would commit a fatal foul just a few minutes later to send Trey DeLoach to the line. DeLoach sank both free-throws to tie the game at 63 all with 1:28 to play. Turnovers from both teams left the tie score as is and sent the game into a second overtime.

Johnson hit another key shot with 1:06 to play in the second overtime, tying the game at 66 all. Richardson answered with a good free-throw for a Savannah State lead and 46 seconds to play. But Fort Valley answered with a good layup from Jacob Coleman, to take a 68-67 lead with 10 seconds to play.

On their final possession, Savannah State called a timeout to draw up the play. Marcus Scott found some room to maneuver in the paint and sank a game-winning layup as the buzzer sounded. Savannah State skimmed out their eighth win of the season 69-68.
