Tigers Drop Close Second Half To Streaking Morehouse

ATLANTA, Ga. – In a tough conference battle with a hot Morehouse team, Savannah State fought until the end, nearly overcoming a double-digit deficient, but fell, 61-72, in the final minutes on Saturday.
 
The Tigers were down 38-19 at the end of the first half, trailing by as much as 27 points in the opening 20 minutes to a Morehouse team currently on a tear with a nine-game winning streak.
 
In the key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) battle, the Tigers had to make some adjustments in the second half.
 
With 15:23 ticking away in the second half, down 44-30, Ayjay Plain dropped a three-pointer to spark a 9-0 run for the Tigers that cut Morehouse's lead to only eight points. The Maroon Tigers kept it close though, trading basket-for-basket with the Tigers down the stretch.
 
Marcus Scott then helped Savannah State get the edge with back-to-back three-pointers that cut Morehouse's lead to 53-49 with 6:44 to play. But the offensive push was short lived for Savannah State and with precious time ticking away, the home team held the Tigers at bay in the final minutes.
 
Avery Joyner and Daryl Richardson led the Tigers with 10 points each. Scott put away nine of his own in the loss.
 
Savannah State (7-9, 5-5) returns to the hardwood on Monday with another key SIAC matchup against Albany State. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
