Baseball Drops Two Of Three-Game Series With Bryant & Stratton

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State baseball came out strong in the opening game of a three-game series with Bryant & Stratton (Albany) this weekend, but dropped two in Saturday's doubleheader.

On Friday, the Tigers spread out 11 hits over the nine inning opener with the Bobcats, picking up an easy 8-2 victory to open the series.

From the plate, Dwayne Franklin went 2-for-3 for the Tigers. Champion Robbins went 2-for-4 with a triple and Phillip Woullard finished 2-for-4 on the day. Cameron Diaz also recorded a big double for Savannah State.

Newcomer Jose Santiago picked up his first pitching win in NCAA Division II with a 6.0 inning appearance. He allowed no earned runs on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts against 19 batters.

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Savannah State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Derek Rivera doubled to left to score Diaz who reached on a fielder's choice for a 1-0 lead.

Bryant & Stratton answered in the top of the third with one run on one hit, taking advantage of two costly Savannah State errors. They tacked on two more runs in the top of the third for a 3-1 lead into the middle innings.

The Tigers offense sputtered through the middle of the game as they stranded three runners through the sixth inning. The Bobcats tacked on one more run in the seventh. Savannah State was unable to plate any more runs, falling 1-4.

Enrico Peele was tagged with the pitching loss after 2.0 innings on the mound. He allowed two earned runs on one hit with five walks and one strikeout. Orlando Leon earned the win after 3.2 innings of work. He allowed no earned runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

In game two of Saturday's twinbill, both teams went scoreless through the four innings. Savannah State stranded four runners, unable to get past a fierce Bobcat infield defense.

With two outs, Bryant & Stratton's Pablo Hurtado reached on a single in the top of the fifth inning and quickly stole second base. Gabe Murillo doubled to left, scoring Hurtado to push the Bobcats to a 1-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Savannah State looked to not only tie the game but take the lead. Franklin walked but was picked off as he attempted to steal for one number one. Diaz got things moving though with a double to right on the next at bat.

Following a ground out from Robbins, Woullard and Jaden Oden were both walked to load the bases for Savannah State. Gabriel Patxot, facing a new pitcher, then flied out to right to end the inning and strand the go-ahead run for Savannah State at second base. Savannah State fell 0-1 following a scoreless seventh inning.

Bryan Valdes-Masson pitched 5.0 innings for the Tigers, allowing one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks against 22 batters. Valdes-Masson was tagged with the loss in his debut for the Tigers.
