Tigers Sweep Series With Salem

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State baseball combined some fine hitting with some excellent pitching to sweep a three-game series with Salem University at Tiger Field.

In game one, the Tigers racked up 10 hits en-route to a 12-2 beating, backed by some stellar pitching from Jose Santiago.

New to the Savannah State starting rotation this year, Santiago pitched 6.0 innings, allowing no earned runs on five hits with two walks and a high six strikeouts. In relief, newcomer Jared Showalter threw the final 3.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

From the plate, returners Phillip Woullard and Champion Robbins led the effort with two hits and three RBI each.

Game two mirrored the opening match as the Tigers again put up 10 hits for a 10-4 rout of Salem. On the mound, returners Enrico Peele and Jackson Hickox led the defensive effort. Peele threw 5.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Jackson closed out the game with 1.2 innings of work and registered only a single hit.

Robbins and Woullard again combined to lead Savannah State offense. Robbins went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Woullard hit 2-for-3 with one RBI. Leadoff man Joseph Smith also went 2-for-3 with one RBI on the day.

The final game was a defensive battle.

Savannah State plated a single run in the first inning. Both teams went scoreless through the next five innings. Getting his second start of the season, Bryan Valdes-Masson was stellar on the mound. He pitched a full 6.0 innings allowing only one hit with one walk and five strikeouts.

But equally so, Salem starter Jaryd Lund pitched a strong 7.0 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh inning, Salem took advantage of an SSU error pushing runners into scoring position and plated a single run to tie the game. With two runners on, the Tiger defense stepped in to end the inning with a double play, keeping Salem from taking the lead.

Derek Rivera got things started for the Tigers in the bottom of the eighth with a single to second base. Rivera moved to second on an error. Smith reached on an error that scored Rivera. Later, Cameron Diaz scored Smith on a sacrifice fly to left field extending Savannah State's lead to 3-1.

In the top of the ninth, Salem again threatened with an RBI single. With the tying run on first base, Savannah State reliever Matthew Terril forced a flyout to end the game. Terril picked up the season's first save after 1.0 innings of work.

Rahmir Vaughn earned his first win this season after 2.0 innings of relief pitching. He allowed no earned runs on one hit. Robbins again led the hitting effort, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
