SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State baseball opens a three-game home series with Bryant & Stratton College (Albany) today.

The Tigers will play a single 9-inning game today at noon and then two 7-inning games on Saturday, which also starts at noon on Tiger Field.

Savannah State opened the 2022 season on Tuesday with a 12 inning game against Georgia College. Despite coming back late the in game to tie it and force extra innings, the Tigers were unable to recoup from some late Georgia College runs and fell 4-6.

The Tigers saw a lot of good things from newcomers in their opening game. Omar Almodovar hit a game tying single while Jared Showalter opened with a strong 5.0 innings on the mound for Savannah State.

The returners were clutch too. Joseph Smith, Champion Robbins, Dwayne Franklin, Gabriel Patxot and Cameron Diaz were all stellar at the plate and will be the Tigers' primary offensive weapons this season.

Starting for Savannah State today will be newcomer Jose Santiago. The right-handed sophomore comes to Savannah from Webber International.

The three-game home series is a special one for Savannah State pitching coach Paul Grubesic who will be coaching against his son Jake Grubesic—a senior outfielder for Bryant & Stratton.

The Bobcats open their season today against Savannah State.

ABOUT SAVANNAH STATE BASEBALL
Savannah State baseball first took the field in 1916. For over 50 years, they played mostly club level baseball against semi-pro teams and non-college teams until the program joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) in 1969. From 1969-199, the Tigers won over 200 games. The 1976-77 squad won the school's first conference championship, beating Bethune-Cookman for the SIAC baseball title. The Tigers won five consecutive SIAC Championships from 1995-1999. In 2013, after elevating to NCAA Division I, Savannah State baseball won the school's first Division I title, beating Bethune-Cookman in the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship. Several Tigers have been drafted to play Major League Baseball.
