Tigers Close Regular Season With Loss To Morehouse

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Morehouse used a 16-3 run in the second half to break open a close game as the Maroon Tigers defeated Savannah State 67-56 in Tiger Arena, before a crowd of 472 spectators. It was SSU's regular season finale.
 
The loss put a damper on Savannah State's Senior Day. Playing their last game in Tiger Arena were six seniors: Travaughn Gordon, Christian Blue, Daryl Richardson, Marcus Scott, Trey DeLoach and Cherestal Bernard.
 
In the opening half, Savannah State jumped out to a 17-9 advantage with Eleik Bowles scoring six points during the surges while Scott added five, Larson Ashford scoring four and DeLoach chipping in two.
 
At the halfway mark of the first period, Savannah State owned a 19-11 lead.
 
Morehouse battled back and tied the contest at 21 with 6:07 showing.
 
With the game knotted at 25, Morehouse received a layup from Josh Nwafor and a 3-pointer from Noah Morgan to take a five point lead but Savannah State answered with a 3-pointer from Scott with 2:58 showing and a jumper from Elavian Bowles at the 1:38 mark to tie the game at 30 apiece.
 
Morehouse finished the first period with back-to-back 3-pointers to go into the half with a 36-30 lead.
 
With just over 13 minutes left in the contest, SSU trailed by 11 but a short jumper by Ayjay Plain cut the Tigers deficit to 47-38.
 
Morehouse responded with a 16-3 spurt that gave the visitors from Atlanta a 63-41 cushion with 7:03 remaining.
 
Not to be outdone, Savannah State answered with ten straight points as five different players scored during the run. The Tigers whittled the Morehouse lead down to 63-51 with 2:21 showing on the clock.
 
A pair of free throws by Bernard with 45 seconds remaining drew SSU within 11 but the Tigers could get no closer.
 
The setback drops Savannah State to 11-13 overall and 8-9 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
 
Despite Morehouse having a size and height advantage, Savannah State out-rebounded the Maroon Tigers 42 to 37 with Richardson grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
Scott paced SSU with 12 points while Plain and Eleik Bowles added 11 points each. Blue dished out five assists.
 
Olisa Akinobi, a 7-foot junior center, led Morehouse (18-6, 14-2 SIAC) with a game-high 33-points.
