Savannah State Powers Past Lane, Advances To Quarterfinals

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Savannah State men's basketball advanced to the next round of the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Tuesday with a 60-50 win over Lane College.

The Tigers—the No. 3 East Division seed—will face Tuskegee (#2W) on Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in a quarterfinals game.

A win on Thursday will send the Tigers to the semifinals on Friday where they will see the winner of a Wednesday quarterfinal game between Morehouse College (#1E) and Spring Hill (#4W).

Following a short back and forth to open Tuesday's game, the Tigers jumped out to a 22-9 lead midway through the opening half behind a 15-4 run. The push was capped by a good three-pointer from Eleik Bowles.

A few minutes later, Avery Joyner hit a three-pointer to give Savannah State a 16 point, 25-9 lead—their largest lead of the game. Down the stretch of the opening twenty, Lane answered the big run. By the half, Savannah State led 30-20.

"This time of year, it's the kind of game nobody wants to go home," Savannah State Head Coach Horace Broadnax said in a post-game press conference. "We jumped out early on Lane. But I told the players, it's going to be an up and down game because nobody wants to go home."

Lane and Savannah State opened the second half with a little back-and-forth, but the Dragons found some room and momentum opening a 10-0 run early on to cut Savannah State's double-digit advantage down to one point, at 42-41, with 10:58 to play.

But the Tigers shored up the defensive effort and answered on the other end of the court with a 10-2 run that included three-pointers from Christian Blue and Joyner, for 52-43 lead with five minutes to play.

"We played well in the first half," Broadnax said. "Came out in the second half and didn't play as well as we needed to. Credit Lane, they made six or seven shots in a row. Then eventually we played some defense and was able to close it out."

A free-throw barrage ensued for the final few minutes. Lane was unable to answer the offensive spurt from the Tigers, falling by 10 points thanks to two good free-throws from Bowles with nine seconds to play.

Joyner scored 21 points in the win for Savannah State while Bowles put away 15. The Tigers shot 44 percent from the three-point line and 44 percent from the floor. They 15-of-25 offerings from the charity strip.
