Tigers Hold Off Fort Valley State

SAVANNAH, Ga.—Savannah State overcame a seven-point deficit and held off a late Fort Valley State rally to beat the Wildcats 62-57 in Tiger Arena on Thursday in their penultimate game of the regular season.
 
Tigers entered the second period down by five but thanks to a 9-0 run to start the period, SSU went ahead 38-34 with 15:48 showing as Christian Blue and Marcus Scott hit 3-pointers, Avery Joyner made a layup and Daryl Richardson hit a free throw.
 
FVSU responded with a 12-1 spurt that put the visitors from middle Georgia ahead with 11:45 remaining.
 
Not to be outdone, Eleik Bowles fueled a 13-2 Savannah State run on the Wildcats where he hit a pair of free throws, a 3-pointers and a layup. With 7:11 left, the Tigers held on to a 52-48 lead.
 
Fort Valley State would not go away as the Wildcats went ahead 57-56 with 3:53 left after a jumper by Quincy Young.
 
The Wildcats would not score again as SSU finished the contest with six unanswered points with Scott hitting a 3-pointer, Trey DeLoach making a layup and ZaKhari Cobb hitting a free throw.
 
The crowd of 1,209 saw SSU improve to 11-12 overall and 8-8 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. 
 
Bowles and Scott each had 10 points for Savannah State. Bowles also had a game-high seven rebounds. Cobb added eight points while Blue and Joyner chipped in seven points apiece. Richardson and Deloach scored six points each and Aly Keys and Ayjay Plain contributed four points each. DeLoach also had four blocks.
 
With the victory, the Tigers sweep the season series with FVSU. Savannah State defeated the Wildcats 69-68 in double overtime in a game played in Fort Valley, Georgia on February 9. They also secured the No. 3 seed into the 2022 SIAC Championship Tournament.
 
Savannah State will close the regular season with a home game against Morehouse on Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
 
A win against the Maroon Tigers will send SSU into the conference tournament with a .500 overall record and a winning record in conference play.
 
Morehouse, who is riding a 16-game winning streak, defeated Savannah State 72-61 on Feb. 5 in Atlanta. The Maroon Tigers, who have not lost a game since December 11, 2021, sport a 16-9 overall record and a 14-2 conference mark.
