Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Skim Past Albany State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – It came down to the final shot in the final second on Monday as Savannah State men's basketball skimmed past Albany State, 64-63, to pick up an important Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) win as they head into the final games of the regular season.

With 4:12 to play Eleik Bowels dropped a three-pointer to etch the Tigers out to a 64-56 lead—one of their largest leads of a back-and-forth battle. Albany State then opened a 7-0 run to cut Savannah State's lead to a single point with 1:45 to play, 64-63, behind two good free-throws from Jordan Simpson.

As the final seconds ticked away on the clock, Simmons missed a shot. On the other end, Trey DeLoach drew a defensive rebound was sent to the line. With 11 seconds to play, DeLoach missed the free throw giving Albany State one more shot at tying or winning the game.

Albany State called a timeout to draw up the final play. They inbounded the ball, kicked it out to the top of the key. Simmons made a run through the paint for the game-winning layup, but Bowles was there to block the shot, kicking the ball out to Kendan Maddox who attempted his own game-winning shot with 1 second rolling away. The ball bounced off the rim and the Tigers walked away with the victory.

DeLoach led the Tigers in the win with 14 points. Marcus Scott dropped in 11 of his own and Za'Khari Cobb put away nine.

Savannah State improved to 10-12 overall and 7-8 in SIAC play. With the win, the Tigers have all but sealed up the No. 3 spot in the SIAC East Division.

They will play two more regular season games prior to the 2022 SIAC Championship, slatted for Feb. 28-March 5 in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

The Tigers face Fort Valley State this Thursday on home court at 7:30 p.m. and then host Morehouse College on Saturday at 5 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on FloSports.
