Women’s Tennis Opens 2022 Season With Win

SUMTER, S.C. – Led by several newcomers, Savannah State women's tennis opened the 2022 season on Saturday with a 6-3 win over the University of South Carolina Sumter.

In the singles action, newcomer Gabrielle Benn led the Lady Tigers to victory in the first court, defeating Alexandra Mille in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4.

Julia Ramos, another newcomer for Savannah State, defeated Natalia Diaz Sanchez in the third court in a thrilling three-game match. Ramos opened with a 6-4 victory in the first set, but fell 6-7 in the second set. Ramos won the tie-breaking third set, 10-4, to claim the point for the Lady Tigers.

Newcomer Sunzahra Banks led the Lady Tigers to victory in the fifth court, beating Abby Kelly in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1. Returner Bria Bembery won the sixth court in straight sets as well, beating Gracen Dowling 6-3 and 6-2.

Savannah State newcomer Amarlia Been fell to Alex Romero in the second court, 6-7 (4-0) and 0-6. Caitlyn Shultz fell to Emily Basley in the fourth court, 1-6 and 0-6.

In doubles action, playing in the first court, the Savannah State team of sisters Gabrielle and Amarlia Benn defeated Mille and Beasley 9-8 with a 5-0 tiebreaker. Banks and Bembery beat Dowling and Kelly in the third court, 8-1. Shultz and Ramos fell to Romero and Sanchez in the second court, 4-8.

The Lady Tigers open Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action Feb. 24 through Feb. 26 in Atlanta with the first of two SIAC Roundups this season.
