Tigers Drop Heated Overtime Battle With Benedict

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State put up a gritty battle against the No. 1 team in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division, forcing the game into overtime where they slipped by only two points, 58-60.

At the midway point, Benedict led Savannah State by a single point. And through the entire second half, the margin only slipped to six points, as both teams battled back and forth for key victory in a loud and rowdy Tiger Arena.

With 1:34 to play in regulation, Benedict led 51-47. Trey DeLoach sank a layup off a turnover to cut that lead, then Taijh Green added a good free-throw as the crowd yelled for a miss.  Eleik Bowels sank a free throw with 28 seconds to play to cut Benedict's lead to 52-50.

But Green responded with another good free throw with 17 seconds to play to make it a 3-point game.

With precious seconds ticking away, Savannah State drove down the court, spread the defense, pushed the ball around the perimeter until they found Bowles in the corner wide open. Bowles drained the three-pointer with just seconds to play tying the game at 53 all.

It was the third time this season Savannah State forced overtime in a game.

Green opened overtime with a good field goal for Benedict, but Bowles quickly tied it back up with two good shots from the charity strip, then dropped one more to give the Tigers the lead.

It was the last time Savannah State would lead as Benedict again pushed out to a lead on a three-point field goal from NyQuan McCombs, then followed that with two good free throws for the final score.

Bowles led the Tigers on the night with 20 points while Avery Joyner put 12 away in the loss.
