Baseball Earns First SIAC Series Win

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State baseball past a major program milestone this past weekend in a three-game series against Kentucky State.

Despite being a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) since the 2020 season, the Tigers have never played an SIAC game.

The pandemic shortened their 2020 season, just before they were to open the conference schedule. In 2021, the Tigers played a full season and faced off against conference teams, but the conference did not host a championship, therefore the games did not count as SIAC games.

This weekend, Savannah State hosted Kentucky State to finally open an SIAC schedule after two years of waiting. After a tough start, the Tigers walked away with two big wins—where they scored at least 10 runs in each game—and their first SIAC series victory.

The weekend was loaded with offense. Both teams combined for 67 hits and 58 runs through the three games.

In game one on Saturday, Savannah State kicked off the scoring with three runs in the second and then four more in the fourth for a 7-0 lead into the middle frames. But the Thorobreds fired back with four runs in the top of the fourth.

Into the seventh inning, Savannah State led 8-4, looking for their first SIAC victory. But Kentucky State squashed that hope with a three-run eighth inning and a monster seven-run ninth inning for a 17-8 lead into the bottom of the final frame.

Looking to stay alive, the Tigers lead off with a single from Gabriel Patxot followed by a triple from Derek Rivera. Then Joseph Smith hit a triple and the Tigers were two runs closer to the 9-run Kentucky State advantage. Cameron Diaz then singled and Andrai Wright scored him on a double. Phillip Woullard then tripled to left for a fifth run.

But the third triple of the inning would be the final scoring for the Tigers. They platted five runs on six hits in the ninth, but fell short 13-17 in the end.

Savannah State opened game two on Saturday with a three-run first inning on hits from Woullard, Smith, and Dwayne Franklin to get the scoring going.

It was the work from the mound, however, that was the game-changer for the Tigers in the second game. Starter Enrico Peele pitched a nearly flawless 6.0 innings for Savannah State, allowing no runs on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts against 24 batters—his strongest performance of the season.

The offense went to work in the third inning. The Tigers racked up eight runs on four hits, including a triple from Diaz and a double from Woullard, for an 11-0 lead. Kentucky State threatened to put up some runs, stranding four runners over subsequent innings, but were unable to plate the scores.

Savannah State earned its first SIAC win with an 11-0 shutout in game two.

In the final game of the series on Sunday, the Tigers again struck early, platting a single run in the first.

But Kentucky State, looking to bounce back from the previous day's loss, fired back in the fourth inning of game three with three runs on three hits for a 3-1 lead. In the top of the fifth, the visitors tacked on two more runs for a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the frame.

Franklin opened the bottom of the fifth with a single to center, but got caught stealing later. Wright reached on an error and Woullard plated him with his second triple of the series. Champion Robbins brought Woullard in on a double and later Patxot earned an RBI on a walk that scored Robbins, giving Savannah State a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning.

On the mound, Savannah State brought in reliever Jared Showalter in the top of the sixth, and the newcomer performed exceedingly well. Showalter pitched the final 4.0 innings, allowing only a single hit with no walks and two strikeouts against 15 batters, earning his first pitching win as a Tiger.

Savannah State tacked on four more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to seal up a 12-5 win over Kentucky State and earn their first conference series win.

Following the series, Woullard leads the hitting stats for Savannah State. After 10 games, he's batting .467 with 11 RBI, 14 hits, including three doubles and two triples.  Franklin is batting .393 this season and Robbins is right behind him at .371. Diaz has 11 RBI as well, with a .265 hitting percentage.

Savannah State's deep bullpen is led by starter Jose Santiago who's 2-0 on the season with a 2.21 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Peele is 2-1 on the season.

The Tigers will play their second SIAC series this weekend against LeMoyne-Owen College. First pitch in the three-game series is set for Friday, Feb. 25, at 12 p.m.
