Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Trounce Flagler; Bowles Scores Career-High 40 Points

Savannah, Ga. – Savannah State men's basketball shot the lights out in Tiger Arena on Thursday, dominating Flagler 94-83 in a non-conference rematch.

Nine days ago, the Tigers recorded an ugly 50-86 loss to Flagler, shooting a dismal 32% from the floor and 31% from beyond the arc.

From the tip-off on Thursday, Savannah State flipped the script on the Saints from St. Augustine. In the first half, the Tigers managed a 50% clip from the floor, sinking 17-of-29 offerings.

Just about everything they put up went in.

They were most dangerous from deep. And when Eleik Bowles was taking shots. Which was often.

Bowles drained a three-pointer two minutes after the tip for the first points of the game en-route to a career-high 40 points on the night. Bowles was immaculate from deep, going 5-for-5. He hit 16-of-20 offerings from the field on the night and went 3-for-5 from the charity stripe.

Savannah State came out of the gate swinging with a 12-6 run in the opening five minutes. Flagler responded to the run with a full-court press midway through, forcing some turnovers. With 5:44 to play in the half, Flagler star Malik Bryant dunked off a turnover to cut SSU's lead to 33-32.

But that was the closest Flagler came to taking the lead in the first half.

The Tigers responded with a three-pointer from Javonte Landy and a layup in the paint from Ayjay Plain to push back out. Plain tacked on two more at the 1:26 point to extend SSU's advantage to 45-38.

Flagler cut that to the three, 46-43, before heading to the locker room.

The full court press from the visitor's continued in the second half and, at first, showed results for Flagler. Within a couple minutes, Jaylen Lemons tied it up at 48 all. With 16:01 to play, Kyle Young drained two free-throws for the visitors to knot it all up at 54.

But that was it for Flagler. They got sloppy with their passing and the Tigers took advantage.

At the 15:56 mark, Savannah State opened a 14-0 run, sparked by a good pull-up jumper from Za'Khari Cobb in the paint. Plain hit another layup at the 13:02 mark to end the massive run for SSU and quell any chance for a second loss to Flagler.

The Tigers killed the full-court press, which Flagler kept on the entire half, holding a double-digit lead down the stretch for the final score.

Bowles was joined in the scoring bonanza by Plain and Cobb who each recorded 20 points on the night. As a team, Savannah State shot 59% from the field and 61.5% from beyond the arc.

Savannah State travels to Morrow, Georgia on Saturday to face Clayton State in another non-conference bout.

They return to Tiger Arena on Monday to face Miles College in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) match. Tip-off for the doubleheader—with the undefeated No. 20 Lady Tigers opening the night—is set for 5:30 p.m.
