Tigers Fall To Clayton State

Morrow, Ga.– Coming off a big mid-week win over Flagler, Savannah State men's basketball dropped a non-conference game to Clayton State on Saturday, 62-49.
 
The Tigers fall to 3-3 on the season with the loss.
 
Clayton State opened Saturday's game with a 6-0 run in the first three minutes. Za'Khari Cobb broke the run with with back-to-back field goals.
 
Savannah State continued to battle in the opening half, keeping Clayton State's lead to single-digits. With 3:36 to play, Clayton State's Jalen Shaw sank a field goal to lift his team to an 11-point, 31-20, lead. By the half, they were up 34-24.
 
In the second half, the Tigers came out strong. Ayjay Plain sparked a 12-3 run for Savannah State with five consecutive field goals. Eleik Bowles capped the run with two field goals to get Savannah State within two points, 36-38, of Clayton State's lead—the closest they would come in the loss.
 
Down the stretch of the second half, the Tigers continued to battle, keeping the home team's advantage to single numbers. But a late 10-1 run from Clayton State sealed up the team's first win of the season.
 
Bowles again led the Tigers with 12 points on the night. Plain added nine and freshman Zion Davis scored eight in the loss.
 
Bowles leads the scoring this season for Savannah State. In the win against Flagler, he put up a career-high 40 points. Overall, he's averaging 18.0 points a game.
 
Savannah State returns to Tiger Arena on Monday for a big cross-divisional Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) game against Miles College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
