Volleyball Closes Out Historic Regular Season

Savannah, Ga. – Savannah State women's volleyball closed out an historic regular season this week as the best team in program history.

The Lady Tigers split their final two matches of the season, beating Allen 3-0 on Tuesday and falling to Edward Waters, 0-3, on Wednesday.

They conclude the 2022 regular season schedule with a 12-11 overall record and a 12-7 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) record.

The 12 overall wins and the 12 conference wins are both school records—dating back to 1994. They surpassed the last best SSU women's volleyball team, the 2009 Lady Tigers who finished their season 11-19.

Statistically, Savannah State has also secured the No. 3 seed out of the SIAC East Division ahead of the 2022 Cricket SIAC Women's Volleyball Championship, another program best.

The Lady Tigers will face the No. 2 seed in the SIAC West Division to open the championship. Unofficially, that will be Lane College. The official bracket will be released next week.

On Tuesday, Savannah State traveled to Columbia, S.C. for their second match with new SIAC member Allen University. The Lady Tigers made quick work of the Yellowjackets, sweeping the regular season series.

Junior Destinee Langston led the stats with 17 kills, followed by freshman Allena Norton (13). Jasmine Nettles recorded a double double with 10 kills and 15 digs while setter Jessee Grubesic had a near-season-high 30 assists in the win.

In their regular season finale, the Lady Tigers hosted the tough Edward Waters, who they've struggled to beat over the last two years. The new SIAC member has torn through the SIAC East Division this year, and secured the No. 1 seed with their win on Thursday.

Savannah State played tough but struggled against a stellar and stingy Edward Waters defense falling 18-25, 18-25, and 22-25 to the Jacksonville Tigers. Langston again led the stats with 16 kills in the loss. Nettles had six kills and 17 digs while Grubesic had 18 assists.

The 2022 Cricket SIAC Women's Volleyball Championship begins on Nov. 10 at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center in Mobile, Ala. The three-day tournament concludes with the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 12.
