Volleyball Closes Out Best Season In Program History

Mobile, Ala. – Thursday morning, Savannah State women's volleyball closed out one of the best seasons in school history at the 2022 Cricket Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship Tournament.

Savannah State closed the regular season last week with a 12-11 overall record and a 12-7 SIAC record, earning the most single-season overall and conference wins in school history.

The Lady Tigers earned the No. 3 seed out of the SIAC East Division into the tournament and drew the No. 2 seed out of the West Division to open in a quarterfinal game.

Savannah State fell, 0-3, to the Dragons in the match Thursday morning, but not without a fight.

After falling 17-25 in the opening set, the Lady Tigers were trailing 4-8 in the second set. Jasmine Nettles recorded a kill to open a run. Libero Kloe Ludy served up three consecutive points after Nettles' kill to knot the set up at eight-all.

Lane pushed back out to a four-point advantage a few serves later. Serteria Butler registered a kill on a set from Jessee Grubesic to open another 4-0 run for the Lady Tigers, tying it up at 15. But down the stretch, SSU only managed three more points after that run and Lane took set two 25-18.

Down, but not out, the Lady Tigers continued to fight in the third set. Late in the game, trailing 17-19, Destinee Langston served up three points, including a service ace to give SSU a 20-19 lead.

But Lane quickly tied it up at 20 as the teams battled through the final few points. Over the next eight serves, a back-and-forth ensued. A Lane kill knotted it up at 24-all.
A kill from Allena Norton and two costly SSU errors lead to a 26-25 lead for Lane. Bre'elle Hawkins ended the game with a service ace, handing the Dragons a 27-25 set win, a 3-0 match victory and a trip to the semifinals.

Langston had 10 kills in the loss and five digs. Norton recorded six kills and two blocks. Butler and Dorothea Ruffin each had three block assists.

Langston—who was named to the 2022 All-SIAC First Team Thursday morning—closed the 2022 season at the top of the offensive stats for SSU. She recorded 256 kills, averaging 3.16 kills a set. She finished third in digs with 217.

Nettles had a great sophomore season, topping the stats in kills (172), digs (250) and led the team in service aces with 33. Destiny Gaines had a solid year on defense, leading the team in blocks with 51.0.

Norton, a true freshman had a fantastic debut. She was second on the team in kills (218) and blocks (47.0). Grubesic, a newcomer this year, earned a starting role at the setter position and led the team in assists with 422 this year.

Following three years at the helm, Head Coach Roselidah Obunaga has gradually improved the program each season, leading her team to three consecutive post-season bids for the first time in program history, and earned 33 overall wins—the most by a single coach in recorded school history (dating back to 1994).

The 2022 Lady Tigers, who finish 12-12 on the season, had no seniors and will look to add to their historic run in the 2023 season.
