Tigers Drop Close Battle With Central State

Wilberforce, Ohio – Savannah State dropped a close game with Central State, 66-70, on Monday night in the finale of a three-game road trip.

The Tigers fall to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action. They return to home court on Thursday, Dec. 1, hosting Flagler in a non-conference matchup.

With 8:03 to play in the second half, Zion Davis finished a second-chance three-pointer to tie the game up at 52 all. Central edged back out to a four-point lead over the next two minutes with four good free-throws.

Davis sank a field goal with 5:15 ticking away to cut Central's lead to 56-53 as the Tigers battled down the stretch. But Central answered quickly with a good three-pointer from Willie Jackson a few seconds later.

Central held on to their fragile lead over the next few minutes behind some good shooting from the free-throw line, tacking on seven more points. Za'Khari Cobb sank two good free-throws to cut Central's lead to 69-66 with 12 seconds left.

Davis scored a steal on the home team's next possession, giving the Tigers a shot, but a costly Savannah State turnover on their ensuing possession all but sealed up the final score.

With five seconds to play, Davis fouled former Savannah State guard Marcus Scott—who transferred to Central State after graduating last year. Scott tacked on the last point with a good free-throw for the final score.

Savannah State shot 39.7% from the floor on the night, going 25-for-63 from the field. Eleik Bowles led the Tigers with 18 points on the night. Davis had 11 while Cobb tacked on 10 in the loss.
