Atlanta, Ga. – Four Savannah State football players have been named to the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) All-Conference teams, according to a press release from the conference office Monday morning.

Chaii Bland, the No. 1 returner in the SIAC, was named to the All-SIAC First Team. Bland—who is ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division II in punt returns—racked up 155 return yards, averaging 38.8 a carry. His longest during the season was a 68-yard dash in the Sept. 15 game against eventual SIAC Champions Benedict College.

Running back Shamarcus Poole was named to the All-SIAC Second Team. The sophomore powered up 359 rushing yards this year on 101 carries, averaging 39.9 yards a game. He helped the Tigers to over a 1,300 yards of offense on the ground this season.

Offensive lineman Kyle Frazier was named to the All-SIAC Second Team. The Tiger offensive line was key in an offense that put up 2,771 total yards this year.
Savannah State finished the season with the 10th best passing offense and 9th best rushing offense in the conference. They were the second best team in the conference in third down conversions this season.

On the other side of the ball, defensive end Makenly Newbill was named to the All-SIAC Second Team. In his senior season, Newbill was a beast at the line, racking up 40 total tackles, 5.0 tackles for a loss, 4.0 sacks and three breakups.

The Tigers finished the season with the third best defense in the SIAC (No. 36 best defense in Division II), the third best scoring defense and the second best first down defense in the conference.

Savannah State closed the 2022 campaign on Nov. 5 with a 44-38 win over Lane College to finish 5-5 on the season and 3-4 in the SIAC schedule.

Savannah State alumnus and Benedict Head Coach Chennis Berry was named the SIAC Coach of the Year after leading his team to a perfect 10-0 record.

Benedict moved to 11-0 on Saturday with a 58-21 rout of Tuskegee in the 2022 SIAC Championship game, earning the school's first conference title in football. On Sunday, they earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA South Region into the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship.
