Volleyball Drops Hard Fought Match To Fort Valley

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In the first of the two key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division matches this week, Savannah State handed Fort Valley State a 3-1 win on Wednesday in Tiger Arena.

With only four matches left in the regular season, the Lady Tigers are vying for a top spot into the 2022 Cricket SIAC Women's Volleyball Championship set for Nov. 10-12.

Even with the loss, Savannah State remains in second place in the SIAC East Division with a 10-9 overall record and 10-5 conference mark. They trail Albany State who is 12-2 in conference this season.

The Lady Tigers looked dominate in the opening set on Wednesday, starting with a 10-3 run. They closed the set with a 25-12 win, and a performance that reflected the two teams records. Fort Valley State had only four wins this season coming into last night's match.

But the Lady Wildcats flipped the script into the second set as Savannah State struggled to overcome costly errors.

On the 20th serve of the second set, Raven Edward recorded a kill. Then a bad set from SSU gave Fort Valley another point. Destinee Jackson followed that with a kill to give the visitors a 14-8 lead and force the Lady Tigers into a timeout.

Late in the set, it became a battle of destiny. Fort Valley led 22-20, looking to tie the match up. Destiny Gaines recorded a kill, and then Destiny Jackson answered in kind. Destinee Langston responded with a kill for Savannah State to cut the Wildcats lead to 23-22. Destiny Gaines then recorded a costly error to make it 24-22 Fort Valley.

A final error from Savannah State handed Fort Valley the 25-22 win, tying the match up at 1-1.

With all the momentum, Fort Valley came out swinging in the third set. Up 20-15, the Lady Tigers zeroed in and found some movement on offense. Jasmine Nettles, and Dorothea Ruffin recorded kills and then two Fort Valley errors cut the visitor's lead to 20-18.

Out of a timeout, both teams traded kills for the subsequent four points. Langston then put away two kills to tie the match at 22 all. Fort Valley pushed out to a 24-22 lead behind two kills and then a costly SSU error again handed the visitor's a 25-22 win for a 2-1 lead in the match.

Late in the fourth set—in a highly contentious and electrifying back-and-forth battle—a Fort Valley error tied it up at 20 all. Then a second error from the visitors gave SSU a 21-20 lead as they Lady Tigers, trailing in the match, looked to force a fifth set.

Jackson recorded a kill for Fort Valley out of a timeout to tie the match up at 21 all. Then Michell Lynch recorded a kill and Naadira Jones recorded a service ace to give Fort Valley a 23-21 lead.

Fort Valley followed the two points up with an error and Serteria Butler put down a kill to again tie the match up, at 23 all. Jackson recorded a kill and an error to tie it up once again at 24 all over the next two points.

Lynch then put down a service ace for Fort Valley's 25 point. Gaines recorded an attack error to hand Fort Valley the 26-24 set win and the 3-1 match win.

Allena Norton and Langston led the Lady Tigers in the loss with 16 kills each. Langston recorded a double-double, adding 14 digs. Jessee Grubesic also recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 16 digs on the night.
